Lyrically Speaking - 2/9/24

#1 Post by littlebeast13 » Thu Feb 08, 2024 5:44 pm

Last time I was going to post the Friday game early, I got burned by no internet connection for 12 hours, so let's not take that chance this week!

One of the most underrated components of rock/pop music are some great horns. I'm not just talking about the saxophone, a lot of great songs from the 70's and 80's rocked killer sax solos. But I'm talking trumpets, trombones, even tubas! The kind of shiny brass you'll only see with a horn section. The following 15 songs all feature music provided by brass instruments other than just a sax. I hope you're feeling appropriately horny for this game...

1 point for the title, 1 point for the artist...

ISE Alert: Keep the italicized word italicized in #8!

1. I'll drive a million miles
To be with you tonight
So if you're feeling low
Turn up your radio

2. Would you mind a reflecting sign?
Just let it shine within your mind
And show you the colors that are real

3. Our hearts were ringing
In the key that our souls were singing
As we danced in the night
Remember

4. Our mum she's so house-proud
Nothing ever slows her down
And a mess is not allowed

5. You put the boom-boom into my heart (ooh-ooh)
You send my soul sky-high
When your lovin' starts

6. Have you ever had the odds stacked up so high
You need a strength most don't possess?
Or has it ever come down to do or die?
You've got to rise above the rest

7. The green light flashes, the flags go up
Churning and burning, they yearn for the cup

8. Baby, babe I meet you
Same place, same time
Where we can, oh, get together
And ease up our mind

9. Ain't nothin' I can say, nothin' I can do,
I feel so bad, yeah, I feel so blue.
I got to make it right for everyone concerned
even if it's me, if it means it's me what's gettin' burned.

10. When there's no destination that's too far
And somewhere on the way you might find out who you are

11. I took my baby to the drive-in show
She turned the speaker down
And then she turned on the radio
I watched a silent movie, diggin' funky sound

12. Fat cat came to play
Now you can't run fast enough
You'd best stay away
When the pushers come to shove

13. I got pictures, got candy, I am a lovable man
I'd like to take you to the nearest star

14. There's a party going on right here
A dedication to last throughout the years

15. When I'm with you
It doesn't matter where we are
Or what we're doing
I'm with you, that's all that matters

Tijuana Taxi - Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass

I spent my college years at Tennessee Tech University, and they had a very good, slightly weird music department. I remember hearing a tuba group perform Devo's Whip It, and the Festival of Pierre Garbage. So here's some interesting music from the Tennessee Tech Tuba Ensemble.

The first is titled: Beast! It starts off fairly normal, then starts getting quirky at about 1:20. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oDWjIlURsKU
Then something more recognizable: "Play That Funky Tuba Right, Boy!" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=38CHDIYxFPM

It's amazing how many songs I heard over the weekend and as soon as the horns played, I was like, "Damn! I wish I'd have thought to put that one in...."

1. I'll drive a million miles
To be with you tonight
So if you're feeling low
Turn up your radio
Everybody Have Fun Tonight - Wang Chung (Because when you think of great horn sections, you think of Wang Chung....)

2. Would you mind a reflecting sign?
Just let it shine within your mind
And show you the colors that are real
Spinning Wheel - Blood Sweat & Tears

3. Our hearts were ringing
In the key that our souls were singing
As we danced in the night
Remember
September - Earth Wind and Fire

4. Our mum she's so house-proud
Nothing ever slows her down
And a mess is not allowed
Our House - Madness (There's a Brit who follows my blog that is just perplexed that Madness is considered a OHW in America. For that matter, I'm perplexed by that as well....)

5. You put the boom-boom into my heart (ooh-ooh)
You send my soul sky-high
When your lovin' starts
Wake Me Up Before You Go Go - Wham!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

6. Have you ever had the odds stacked up so high
You need a strength most don't possess?
Or has it ever come down to do or die?
You've got to rise above the rest
The Impression That I Get - Mighty Mighty Bosstones

7. The green light flashes, the flags go up
Churning and burning, they yearn for the cup
The Distance - Cake

8. Baby, babe I meet you
Same place, same time
Where we can, oh, get together
And ease up our mind
Get Down Tonight - KC & The Sunshine Band

9. Ain't nothin' I can say, nothin' I can do,
I feel so bad, yeah, I feel so blue.
I got to make it right for everyone concerned
even if it's me, if it means it's me what's gettin' burned.
So Very Hard To Go - Tower of Power

10. When there's no destination that's too far
And somewhere on the way you might find out who you are
Living In America - James Brown

11. I took my baby to the drive-in show
She turned the speaker down
And then she turned on the radio
I watched a silent movie, diggin' funky sound
Boogie Fever - Sylvers

12. Fat cat came to play
Now you can't run fast enough
You'd best stay away
When the pushers come to shove
Zoot Suit Riot - Cherry Poppin' Daddies

13. I got pictures, got candy, I am a lovable man
I'd like to take you to the nearest star
Vehicle - Ides of March

14. There's a party going on right here
A dedication to last throughout the years
Celebration - Kool & The Gang

15. When I'm with you
It doesn't matter where we are
Or what we're doing
I'm with you, that's all that matters
Beginnings - Chicago

Image Bonus: Grab life by the horns...

Kroxquo gets the IBB for flashbacks of those Ricola commercials back in the day when I actually watched TV. Hey, I heard there was a football game on last night.....
