Lyrically Speaking - 2/7/24

Rockin' in the USA takes us to our third section of the country this week, and one I'm obviously quite partial to....

Image

All of the artists below either grew up in or formed their bands in a city in one of the states I arbitrarily defined as my Midwest area. Don't like it? Well, it's out to the cornfield with you....

1 point for the title, 1 point for the artist, 0 points for the state...

1. I guess I should've known
By the way you parked your car sideways
That it wouldn't last

2. He used to carry his guitar in a gunny sack
Go sit beneath the tree by the railroad track

3. Reading, writing, arithmetic
Are the branches of the learning tree
But without the roots of love everyday girl
Your education ain't complete

4. My life has been such a whirlwind since I saw you
I've been running 'round in circles in my mind

5. They say the sea turns so dark that
You know it's time, you see the sign
They say the point demons guard is
An ocean grave for all the brave

6. Some people ain't no damn good
You can't trust 'em, you can't love em
No good deed goes unpunished
And I don't mind being their whipping boy
I've had that pleasure for years and years

7. But don't let my glad expression
Give you the wrong impression

8. Don't you think the time is right for us to find
All the things we thought weren't proper could be right in time
And can you see

9. When I'm out walking
I strut my stuff
And I'm so strung out
I'm high as a kite
I just might stop to check you out

10. I'll shine up my old brown shoes
I'll put on a brand new shirt
I'll get home early from work
If you say that you love me

11. I, I was the game he would play
He brought the clouds to my day
Then like a ray of light
You came my way one night

12. Ah, breaker one-nine, this here's the Rubber Duck
You gotta copy on me, Pig Pen, c'mon?

I'm already here and I just made my first cup of coffee (yes, I answered the previous game SANS COFFEE), so what the hell...

1. I guess I should've known
By the way you parked your car sideways
That it wouldn't last

Little Red Corvette - Prince

*clap clap* I should have known this krox wouldn't last (ha!). Also, PRESCIENT points!!!

2. He used to carry his guitar in a gunny sack
Go sit beneath the tree by the railroad track

Johnny B. Goode - The Chuckster

3. Reading, writing, arithmetic
Are the branches of the learning tree
But without the roots of love everyday girl
Your education ain't complete

ABC - Jackson 5

I figured there'd be a lot of Motown in here...

4. My life has been such a whirlwind since I saw you
I've been running 'round in circles in my mind

Can't Fight This Feeling - REO Speedwagon

My first thought: Speedwagon is from the Midwest??? Second thought: Well, they did name themselves after an Oldsmobile Third thought: You can tune a piano, but you can't tuna fish

5. They say the sea turns so dark that
You know it's time, you see the sign
They say the point demons guard is
An ocean grave for all the brave

Point of No Return - Kansas

Why are you such pretentious dicks? You're from Kansas, for God's Sake!!!

6. Some people ain't no damn good
You can't trust 'em, you can't love em
No good deed goes unpunished
And I don't mind being their whipping boy
I've had that pleasure for years and years

Tumbling Down - John Cougar

Or is it Crumbling Down? The world may never know...

7. But don't let my glad expression
Give you the wrong impression

Tears of a Clown - Smokey Robinson and the Miracles

8. Don't you think the time is right for us to find
All the things we thought weren't proper could be right in time
And can you see

Amie- Pure Prairie League

Fanny Fun Fact: My niece was named after this song

9. When I'm out walking
I strut my stuff
And I'm so strung out
I'm high as a kite
I just might stop to check you out

Perfect I'll Never Be - The Exception That Proves the Rule

10. I'll shine up my old brown shoes
I'll put on a brand new shirt
I'll get home early from work
If you say that you love me

I Want YOU to Want ME - Cheap Trick

11. I, I was the game he would play
He brought the clouds to my day
Then like a ray of light
You came my way one night

Foiled Again - The Midwest Marauders

12. Ah, breaker one-nine, this here's the Rubber Duck
You gotta copy on me, Pig Pen, c'mon?

Convoy - CW McCall

RIP Bill. I always forget he was from Iowa (in a town called Audubon) because I associate him so much with Ouray

Kroxquo Bonus: Name another song by an artist from one of my Midwest states.

This Ain't a Scene (It's an Arms Race) - Fall Out Boy aka the Kings of Parentheticals and Absurdly Long Song Titles

I was going to go with Delaney & Bonnie as a shout out to you, but emo-pop punk is criminally underrepresented on these games...

Convoy, C.W. McCall. Thanks for the gimmee. I was tempted to post some lyrics from Wolf Creek Pass, but I didn't want to make you tireder of me than you already were. McCall was very popular around these parts, being mayor of Ouray over a couple or three mountain passes.

1. I guess I should've known
By the way you parked your car sideways
That it wouldn't last
Little Red Corvette - Prince (Tolerable Prince... aka, not When Doves Cry or Kiss)

2. He used to carry his guitar in a gunny sack
Go sit beneath the tree by the railroad track
Johnny B. Goode - Chuck Berry (Every once in a while my Dad would take a venture into the high limit slot room at the local casino and found himself sitting next to ol' Chuck one time. Now they're both making big bets in another place...)

3. Reading, writing, arithmetic
Are the branches of the learning tree
But without the roots of love everyday girl
Your education ain't complete
ABC - Jackson 5

4. My life has been such a whirlwind since I saw you
I've been running 'round in circles in my mind
I Can't Fight This Feeling - REO Speedwagon (The two ballads made them stars, and they both suck. This band could absolutely rock it out, though....)

5. They say the sea turns so dark that
You know it's time, you see the sign
They say the point demons guard is
An ocean grave for all the brave
Point of Know Return - Kansas (I gave the educated few who knew it was "Know" an extra point, so holla if I missed you....)

6. Some people ain't no damn good
You can't trust 'em, you can't love em
No good deed goes unpunished
And I don't mind being their whipping boy
I've had that pleasure for years and years
Crumblin' Down - John Cougar Mellencamp (To think that two of the most successful pop stars of the 80's came from the great state of Indiana....)

7. But don't let my glad expression
Give you the wrong impression
Tears of a Clown - Smokey Robinson & The Miracles

8. Don't you think the time is right for us to find
All the things we thought weren't proper could be right in time
And can you see
Amie - Pure Prairie League (Back in the day when regional hits could morph organically into national ones...)

9. When I'm out walking
I strut my stuff
And I'm so strung out
I'm high as a kite
I just might stop to check you out
Blister in the Sun - Violent Femmes (I can't stand this song, but I wanted a Wisconsin band and thought Citizen King might be a bit too obscure for y'all....)

10. I'll shine up my old brown shoes
I'll put on a brand new shirt
I'll get home early from work
If you say that you love me
I Want You To Want Me - Cheap Trick (See my note on Candle in the Wind, I absolutely prefer the studio version over the live version hit...)

11. I, I was the game he would play
He brought the clouds to my day
Then like a ray of light
You came my way one night
You Got It All - The Jets (What would you get if The Osmonds had Tongan lineage? The most ridiculously forgotten band of the entire 80's. These guys and gals had 5 Top 10 hits, sang the National Anthem at Game 7 of the 1987 World Series, and nobody remembers them at all anymore.... except someone who got a SUPERMAX out of it!)

12. Ah, breaker one-nine, this here's the Rubber Duck
You gotta copy on me, Pig Pen, c'mon?
Convoy - C.W. McCall (I'm on record as not liking this song either, but it got Iowa represented in the game!)

Image Bonus: Show me something from the Midwest!

Sprots gets the IBB for a photo you can only take from the great state of Illinois! And no, I've never been up in the Arch before, that's something tourists do....

JJC Points:

Panic got 3 JJC points for the World's Largest Ball of SISAL Twine!

Earl gets 3 JJC points for I Want YOU To Want ME and for fucking annoying goddamn "pop" drinkers. Seriously, someone I used to work with came from Chicago and it was nails on the chalkboard every time he said "pop." I'm glad I live in one of the few Midwestern places where we drink SODA like civilized people....

mikeh gets 2 JJC points for that other ball of twine...

Weasel gets a JJC point for a meme that had to be made by someone in the South. Had he put the snow on fire image first, there'd have been more points...

Krox gets a JJC point for my least favorite TZ episode of them all...

frank gets 2 JJC points for what Iowans did before smartphones...

jarnon gets 2 JJC points for the Chicago River before they put dye in it....

melly gets 2 JJC points for North Dakota and Paul Bunyan...

Beebs gets a JJC point for something that looks completely unappetizing...

mrk gets 3 JJC points for not mid or west and for Dollar General (ours is in a strip mall that's been around forever, but I've seen plenty of those weirdly located DG's before....)

Bob gets 2 JJC points for one of the least favorite stadiums I ever attended (It didn't help that the game was in mid May and it still almost snowed)....

BiT gets 2 JJC points for the Butter Brick Road...

Hottie gets a big huge honkin SUPERMAX for being the only one to get The Jets song!

Vandal gets 3 JJC points for turkey-causing ISE's...

Sprots gets 3 JJC points for showing up very unfashionably late and for East St. Louis...
