Fireball's Fantastic 500 (2024 Edition) -- Early 1970s, Part 4

#1 Post by Pastor Fireball » Tue Feb 06, 2024 7:26 am

Time to wrap up my second section of my 2024 musical update.

#15. Long As I Can See the Light, Creedence Clearwater Revival (1970) -- #23 in 2018

#14. Can't Get Enough of Your Love, Babe, Barry White (1974) -- #21 in 2018

#13. Lean on Me, Bill Withers (1972) -- #6 in 2018

#12. Come and Get Your Love, Redbone (1974) -- #10 in 2018

#11. If You Really Love Me, Stevie Wonder (1971) -- #5 in 2018

#10. Levon, Elton John (1971) -- #2 in 2018

#9. Long Tall Glasses (I Can Dance), Leo Sayer (1974) -- Late 1970s #13 in 2018

Though it wasn't a hit until 1975, this song was actually recorded in the previous year, so it technically belongs on this list. This shift from a stronger list is what makes it appear this song increased in rank.

#8. One of a Kind (Love Affair), the Spinners (1973) -- #11 in 2018

#7. Desperado, Linda Ronstadt (1973) -- #13 in 2018

A Facebook post from kroxquo regarding "Desperado" was what motivated me to redo my entire Top 500 list.

#6. Burning Love, Elvis Presley (1972) -- #8 in 2018

#5. Rainy Night in Georgia, Brook Benton (1970) -- #3 in 2018

#4. Mighty Love (Part I), the Spinners (1974) -- #4 in 2018

#3. Just Crazy Love, Fleetwood Mac (1973) -- #12 in 2018

This early Fleetwood Mac song jumped unsurprisingly after dear Christine McVie passed away a little more than a year ago.

#2. Tomorrow Is Today, Billy Joel (1971) -- NEW!

This is a massive debut for a song from Billy's debut album--an album that has been almost universally maligned for its shoddy production. Thanks to SiriusXM's special Billy Joel Channel that has broadcast occasionally over the past few years, I've become acquainted with every song from this album. I found the album to be quite charming and fascinating. Listening past the horrid mastering of the record, Billy's early songwriting talents shone. "Tomorrow Is Today" tugged at my heart like no other.

#1. Without You, Harry Nilsson (1972) -- #1 in 2018

Just like with my 1960s list, my favorite song is unchanged for this list.

Next week, it's on to the second half of the 1970s!
"[Drumpf's] name alone creates division and anger, whose words inspire dissension and hatred, and can't possibly 'Make America Great Again.'" --Kobe Bryant (1978-2020)

"In times of crisis, the wise build bridges. The foolish build barriers." --Chadwick Boseman (1976-2020)
