Lyrically Speaking - 1/25/24

#1 Post by littlebeast13 » Thu Jan 25, 2024 5:52 am

Every Thursday I'm selecting a year at random from the last six full decades, and for the 60's this week, the spinner stopped on 1964! I was still eleven years from making an appearance in this world, so I have nothing personal to add to this intro.... but you old fogies can reminisce all you want about that magical year sixty years ago while you answer this LSWE game featuring all songs that were released, or at least on the charts in 1964...

1 point for the title, 1 point for the artist...

1. When I'm home
Everything seems to be right
When I'm home
Feeling you holding
me tight, tight, yeah

2. Every time you kiss me, I'm still not certain that you love me
Every time you hold me, I'm still not certain that you care

3. My mother was a tailor
Sewed my new blue jeans

4. Oh, when the sun beats down and burns the tar up on the roof
And your shoes get so hot you wish your tired feet were fire proof

5. She drives real fast and she drives real hard
She's the terror of Colorado Boulevard

6. Last time I saw Marie she was wavin' me goodbye
With "hurry-home" drops on her cheek that trickled from her eye

7. Whoa-oh-oh, hug him and squeeze him tight
Find out what you want to know

8. Some say it's a sign of weakness
For a man to beg
Then weak I'd rather be
If it means having you to keep
'Cause lately I've been losing sleep

9. How long can I exist?
Wanting lips I've never kissed
She gives all her kisses to somebody else

10. We walked together hand in hand
'Cross miles and miles of golden sand
But now it's over and done

11. I love you, I love you, I love you so
But I don't want you to know
I need you, I need you, I need you so
And I'll never let you go

12. But you'll come running back (said you would baby)
You'll come running back (I said so many times before)
You'll come running back to me

Kroxquo Bonus: Name another song with artist that was released or on the charts in 1964 (2 years either way is fine).

Image Bonus: If you can remember the 60's, you obviously didn't live through them....

I'm sure that 64 was the Animals, although I knew it better by Waylon Jennings because my dad's C&W band did it

4. Oh, when the sun beats down and burns the tar up on the roof

I'm seconding guessing myself on this one with Ben E. King, was he part of the Drifters? My knee jerk was Dobie Gray but immediately realized that he was Drift Away, ha!

Memphis - Charles Berry

I know Cher did it in Mermaids, but trying to play it in the spirit given and figure the 64 artist and the default girl group guess is the Crystals (now watch it be the Ronettes...

It Hurts to Be in Love - Gene Pitney

I Will Follow Him - Little Peggy March

Thanks for the two year cushion! Since you used the Beatles and Stones, I would have had to take a blind stab at a British Invasion band. Although I don't know if it was still on the charts in 1964, I know exactly when this hit #1...

I'm not done yet! My computer keyboard started going crazy and backed out out my window and then all of the keys were doing weird things like adding new windows and adjusting font size so I finally had to restart it. Then it froze and took a full 15 minutes to reload. Thank goodness I see it posted my reply before backing out, but I'm going to edit to finish my answer and add the spoiler.

1. When I'm home
Everything seems to be right
When I'm home
Feeling you holding
me tight, tight, yeah
Hard Day's Night - Beatles

2. Every time you kiss me, I'm still not certain that you love me
Every time you hold me, I'm still not certain that you care
Suspicion - Terry Stafford (Always assumed this was Elvis until I learned otherwise about a decade ago. The historic week The Beatles held the top 5 spots on the Billboard charts in April 1964, this was the song that had the honor of being #6.)

3. My mother was a tailor
Sewed my new blue jeans
House of the Rising Sun - Animals (This made the lower portion of my Top 30 Iconic Songs I Can't Stand countdown I did on my blog a few years ago. Can't stand Eric Burdon's screaming in this song, and from what I'd discovered then, pretty much every artist that's covered it did the same goddamn thing....)

4. Oh, when the sun beats down and burns the tar up on the roof
And your shoes get so hot you wish your tired feet were fire proof
Under the Boadrwalk - The Drifters (When I did my word games Tangredi game six years ago, I desperately wanted to find another Boardwalk song so I could sandwich a Drifters song in between a Boardwalk song and a Roof song...)

5. She drives real fast and she drives real hard
She's the terror of Colorado Boulevard
The Little Old Lady (From Paratheticaldena) - Jan and Dean (People still answer The Beach Boys to this song? Really? And if they actually did cover it, I don't care....)

6. Last time I saw Marie she was wavin' me goodbye
With "hurry-home" drops on her cheek that trickled from her eye
Memphis - Johnny Rivers (If I had been previously educated that this started off as a Chuck Berry song, then I sure forgot about it. But Rivers had the hit in America, and of course that was in 1964. Not that it mattered, I still gave crecit for Chuck. Marvin would want it that way...)

7. Whoa-oh-oh, hug him and squeeze him tight
Find out what you want to know
The Shoop Shoop Song (It's In His Parenthetical) - Betty Everett (The Cher version has been a frequent Mecca earworm, and isn't half bad...)

8. Some say it's a sign of weakness
For a man to beg
Then weak I'd rather be
If it means having you to keep
'Cause lately I've been losing sleep
Baby I Need Your Loving - Four Tops

9. How long can I exist?
Wanting lips I've never kissed
She gives all her kisses to somebody else
It Hurts To Be In Love - Gene (Town Without) Pitney

10. We walked together hand in hand
'Cross miles and miles of golden sand
But now it's over and done
Yesterday's Gone - Chad and Jeremy

11. I love you, I love you, I love you so
But I don't want you to know
I need you, I need you, I need you so
And I'll never let you go
My Boy Lollipop - Millie Small

12. But you'll come running back (said you would baby)
You'll come running back (I said so many times before)
You'll come running back to me
Time Is On My Side - Rolling Stones (And sixty fucking years later, ain't it the truth....)

Image Bonus: If you can remember the 60's, you obviously didn't live through them....

Vandal gets the IBB for smoking outside the boys room. It's funny, because my mind was still on the Northeast game when I looked at your answers and I was trying to figure out how in the hell that related...

Pretty sure it is true. From the National Park Service

https://www.nps.gov/lyjo/planyourvisit/ ... hicles.htm

Built in Germany from 1961 to 1968, the Amphicar is the only civilian amphibious passenger automobile ever to be mass produced. A total of 3,878 vehicles were produced in four colors: Beach White, Regatta Red, Fjord Green (Aqua), and Lagoon Blue--the color of President Johnson's Amphicar.

President Johnson enjoyed surprising unsuspecting guests when taking them for a ride in his Amphicar.

The President, with Vicky McCammon in the seat alongside him and me in the back, was now driving around in a small blue car with the top down. We reached a steep incline at the edge of the lake and the car started rolling rapidly toward the water. The President shouted, "The brakes don’t work! The brakes won’t hold! We’re going in! We’re going under!" The car splashed into the water. I started to get out. Just then the car leveled and I realized we were in a Amphicar. The President laughed. As we putted along the lake then (and throughout the evening), he teased me. "Vicky, did you see what Joe did? He didn’t give a damn about his President. He just wanted to save his own skin and get out of the car." Then he’d roar.

You left some extra characters after the .jpg tag that was causing your image not to show up, so it just looked blank to me.

Actually, removing the extra characters doesn't seem to get it to show up either... so I opened the link in another window. Your five points have been added...

Thanks. That’s odd. I don’t see extra characters and I do see the image. —Bob

Hitting "quote" on your post, I see this as the link:

https://www.centralmaine.com/wp-content ... .jpg?w=999

The "?=999", I think, is some kind of framing mechanism for the image, but anything extra after the .jpg extension usually makes images not work on this Bored. The weird thing is that it was just blank, and was still just blank when I responded to this last night. Now, I see where it just says "Image", and I do know to check the actual post for an image link if I see that...

Ouch! I'm really sorry to miss this one. I would have gotten 10, maybe 11. I would have missed the Gene Pitney song and probably My Boy Lollipop. I'm familiar with the song, but those lyrics probably wouldn't have brought it to mind.
