The LSWE's first edition of Rockin' in the USA brings us to the Northeast part of the country. In particular, the states you see here (plus the District of Columbia):

Image

Each of the songs below comes from a solo artist who was raised in, or a group that was formed in one of the states you see above... and is generally associated with a city in my arbitrarily defined Northeast territory. Don't like it? Well, you might find yourself sleeping with the fishes in the Hudson...

1 point for the title, 1 point for the artist...

1. He says, "Son can you play me a memory?
I'm not really sure how it goes

2. I got lots of money, but it isn't what I need
Gonna take more than a shot to get this poison out of me
And I got all the symptoms, count 'em one, two, three

3. I broke a thousand hearts
Before I met you
I'll break a thousand more, baby
Before I am through

4. And you may tell yourself, "This is not my beautiful house"
And you may tell yourself, "This is not my beautiful wife"

5. Speak easy on the grapevine
Keep shufflin' in a shoeshine
Old tin lizzy, do it till you're dizzy
Give it all ya got until you're put out of your misery

6. I get up in the evenin'
And I ain't got nothin' to say
I come home in the mornin'
I go to bed feelin' the same way

7. Money's the matter
If you're in it for love
You ain't gonna get too far

8. I looked out this morning and the sun was gone
Turned on some music to start my day
I lost myself in a familiar song
I closed my eyes and I slipped away

9. And then she lost her mind and did the ultimate
I asked her for Adidas and she bought me Zips!

10. And you try to run but he's got a gun
And he shoots you dead and he eats your head

11. Everyone can see we're together
As we walk on by
And we fly just like birds of a feather
I won't tell no lie

12. Help me, help me
Cause you know I'm not that strong
Help me, help me darlin'
I've been lonely for too long

Kroxquo Bonus: Name another song from an artist or group from the Northeast.

Piano Man - Billy Joel - New York

2. I got lots of money, but it isn't what I need
Gonna take more than a shot to get this poison out of me
And I got all the symptoms, count 'em one, two, three

Bad Medicine - Bon Jovi - New Jersey

If not pressed for time, I was going to add onto my Bon Jovi story with 'why was Bon Jovi in a book about the emo-punk movement?" and I recall that they were talking about the DIY sense of those bands and My Chemical Romance was also from New Jersey and inspired by JBJ

3. I broke a thousand hearts
Before I met you
I'll break a thousand more, baby
Before I am through

Bad to the Bone - George Thorogood - Delaware

Took me a second to remember the Delaware Destroyer nickname...

4. And you may tell yourself, "This is not my beautiful house"
And you may tell yourself, "This is not my beautiful wife"

Burning Down the House - Talking Heads - Rhode Island

I know next to nothing about this group, so I'm just going with RI because for some reason I associate it with kind of weird, off kilter, artsy types (probably because of places like Providence and Provincetown and David Byrne seems like he could be a Lovecraft creation

5. Speak easy on the grapevine
Keep shufflin' in a shoeshine
Old tin lizzy, do it till you're dizzy
Give it all ya got until you're put out of your misery

Ragdoll - Aerosmith - Massachusetts

6. I get up in the evenin'
And I ain't got nothin' to say

I go to bed feelin' the same way

Dancing in the Dark - Bruce Springsteen - New Jersey

7. Money's the matter
If you're in it for love
You ain't gonna get too far

Maneater - Hall & Oates - Pennsylvania

Just going on the whole Philly blue eyed soul tag that was put on them

8. I looked out this morning and the sun was gone
Turned on some music to start my day
I lost myself in a familiar song
I closed my eyes and I slipped away

More Than a Feeling - Boston - Massachusetts

obvs....

9. And then she lost her mind and did the ultimate
I asked her for Adidas and she bought me Zips!

Parents Just Don't Understand - DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince - Pennsylvania

which I only know because of the Fresh Prince theme song...

10. And you try to run but he's got a gun
And he shoots you dead and he eats your head

Rapture - Blondie - New York

Torn on this one because I think Debbie Harry is from Union City, but I associate them with the punk scene at CBGB's and all that in NYC

11. Everyone can see we're together
As we walk on by
And we fly just like birds of a feather
I won't tell no lie

We Are Family - Sister Sledge - Pennsylvania

Just going with it because of the 79 Pirates

12. Help me, help me
Cause you know I'm not that strong
Help me, help me darlin'
I've been lonely for too long

Ugh, this is killing me because I know that I know this but that last line won't get I've Been Lonely Too Long out of my head and I know the tune isn't like that at all. Also I'll say Maine because why not?

Kroxquo Bonus: Name another song from an artist or group from the Northeast.

Teenagers - My Chemical Romance

I don't think I've ever seen a My Chem song in an LS and that needs to change! Plus I decided yesterday (although I already blew it on day 1) that I'm going to try and only krox songs that I actually own in some form

Okay, was I the only one who mistakenly swore that the rules said we'd get points for the geographical location of the artists or was I the only one that read the rules all the way through?

ETA: I guess 'last game' means the last game of this type, where I read it as the last game that you explained at that point in the rules. But Bonus Paying Attention Points for proving that I read all the way through the description for each new game!

I did throw out an extra JJC for the effort, since I won't award bonus points for JBJ two days in a row! (Baseball fans will think I'm talking about Jackie Bradley, Jr.)

The last Wednesday game will have matching artists to the five geographical areas, not individual states. I only stressed states in the intro to accurately define the borders of the featured area...

Vandal gets 3 JJC points for directions for the locals...

melly gets 2 JJC points for a parade (Yes, I looked it up!)

Here's a little more about the late, great Root Boy Slim.

The first time I read about Root was in a Rolling Stone review of the first Van Halen album in 1978. https://sonicmoremusic.wordpress.com/20 ... 10th-1978/ When I read the line "Gary Katz, of Steely Dan fame, has produced a clean and eminently listenable instrumental sound while retaining the uniqueness of the Root’s voice, which resonates like an emphysema victim vomiting inside the Goodyear blimp (check out “Boogie ’til You Puke”)" I knew I had to get it, so I ordered an eight-track.

When it arrived, I knew a guy in my dorm with a good stereo, so on a weekday afternoon, with few people in the dorm, we cranked it up. Within minutes, three people came down to the room, all asking the same question - "What is that noise?" It was a keeper.

I later learned more about him, and he certainly lived an interesting life. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Root_Boy_Slim His real name was Foster MacKenzie III, he went to Yale, and was in the same fraternity as George W. Bush (who Root disliked for throwing him out of the frat house).

He did lots of interesting songs: https://www.youtube.com/results?search_ ... oy+slim%22 Besides "Boogie 'til You Puke", I recommend "I Used to be a Radical", "My Wig Fell Off", "In Jail in Jacksonville","You Broke My Mood Ring", and so many others. Great memories of my college days.

Did your research reveal that the saxophone player in that parade is future NFL Hall of Famer Jason Kelce, who outdid his parade performance last weekend when he partied shirtless in the Buffalo cold at his bro’s playoff game?

Speaking of Sammy Hagar, he was the guest on a recent episode of Finding Your Roots. He was surprised to find out that he:
Spoiler
1) Is descended from fruit mobsters

2) Is genetically not a Hagar, he's a Belcher. His great-great-great Grandma Hagar had a fling with the one of the Belcher men. Scandalous!

I didn't see the episode, but read an article about it. Just goes to show that tracing a family tree by the paternal line is a crap shoot. So I guess instead of Sammy Slacks, he's Sammy Burgers?
