Lyrically Speaking - 1/23/24

#1 Post by littlebeast13 » Tue Jan 23, 2024 7:49 am

It's time for Tuesday Hidden Wordplay, where unlike my previous Tuesday series, these songs will all have a word in common somewhere in their lyrics. Obviously, the word we're looking for won't be a real common word. I'm pretty sure the word "the" appears in most songs (and yes, I did once use that word for a Tuesday Wordplay game!). Even a word like "love' is way too common in songs to qualify. I think you'll know it when you find it, and I made sure to include what I thought was the easiest of the six games first. If you identify at least three or four of these songs, I think you'll figure out the word...

A couple more things: The key word will never appear in the title, and it also won't appear in the lyrics I post. Also, variants of the key word won't work. If the key word is "squirrel," then "squirrels" or "squirreled" or "squirrel's" won't qualify a song for the set.

And don't forget, Monday's game remains open until tomorrow morning!

1 point for the title, 1 point for the artist, 3 points for the key word...

1. I come home in the morning light,
My mother says, 'When you gonna live your life right?'

2. Well the girls can't stand her
'Cause she walks, looks and drives like an ace now
(You walk like an ace now, you walk like an ace)

3. In this time, give it to me easy
And let me try with pleasured hands

4. Now my girl, you're so young and pretty
And one thing I know is true
You'll be dead before your time is due, I know

5. So I sneak out to the garden to see you
We keep quiet, 'cause we're dead if they knew
So close your eyes
Escape this town for a little while, oh oh

6. You know she likes the lights
At night on the neon Broadway signs
She don't really mind
It's only love she hoped to find

7. I used to be a heart beatin' for someone
But the times have changed
The less I say, the more my work gets done

8. I scream, you scream
We all scream for her

9. Well the kids don't eat
And the dog can't sleep
There's no escape from the music
In the whole damn street

10. I can't stand her
Doing what she did before
Leaving like a gypsy queen in a fairy tale

11. Well, if it rains, I don't care
Don't make no difference to me

12. Stand in the front just a shakin' your ass
I'll take you backstage, you can drink from my glass

1. I come home in the morning light,
My mother says, 'When you gonna live your life right?'
Girls Just Wanna Have Fun - Cyndi Lauper (Good to see a few of you were alert to this first Annie Bonus opportunity! I've made a more concerted effort to include for AB eligible songs this year than in recent contests....)

2. Well the girls can't stand her
'Cause she walks, looks and drives like an ace now
(You walk like an ace now, you walk like an ace)
Fun Fun Fun - The Beach Boys

3. In this time, give it to me easy
And let me try with pleasured hands
Time of the Season - The Zombies (I really wanted to include this song, but almost gave up since the only good lyrics to include contained the key word...)

4. Now my girl, you're so young and pretty
And one thing I know is true
You'll be dead before your time is due, I know
We Got To Get Out Of This Place - Animals

5. So I sneak out to the garden to see you
We keep quiet, 'cause we're dead if they knew
So close your eyes
Escape this town for a little while, oh oh
Love Story - Taylor Swift (There are only two Taylor songs I like, and this definitely is not one of them....)

6. You know she likes the lights
At night on the neon Broadway signs
She don't really mind
It's only love she hoped to find
Runaway - Bon Jovi

7. I used to be a heart beatin' for someone
But the times have changed
The less I say, the more my work gets done
Philadelphia Freedom - Elton John

8. I scream, you scream
We all scream for her
Cherry Pie - Warrant

9. Well the kids don't eat
And the dog can't sleep
There's no escape from the music
In the whole damn street
Squeezebox - The Who

10. I can't stand her
Doing what she did before
Leaving like a gypsy queen in a fairy tale
My Old School - Steely Dan (Not one of their bigger hits, which is a bit of a surprise since the 70's station I listened to in the 90's played it all the time. But it actually makes reference to TWO Daddys, one of them none other than G. Gordon Liddy...)

11. Well, if it rains, I don't care
Don't make no difference to me
Black Water - Doobie Brothers

12. Stand in the front just a shakin' your ass
I'll take you backstage, you can drink from my glass
Sweet Emotion - Aerosmith

What word can be found in the lyrics to all of these songs? - DADDY!

Image Bonus: If you know the word, show me a fitting image.

I'm giving the IBB to Frank for this one, not only because that's a great image, but I had no idea Burl Ives was anything other than a crooner of bad Christmas songs...

That would have actually been invalid since it only appears as "Daddy's" in the lyrics....

I'm giving the IBB to Frank for this one, not only because that's a great image, but I had no idea Burl Ives was anything other than a crooner of bad Christmas songs...
Burl had quite a career. He first gained a reputation as a wandering troubadour of the Pete Seeger type, was big on radio, and was eventually blacklisted due supposed communist ties. He originated the role of Big Daddy on Broadway before playing it on film, and also won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for The Big Country.

I'll always remember him best, though, for an album of children's songs he released when I was a kid. We listened to it incessantly. That's where I first heard songs like The Lollipop Tree, Froggie Went a Courtin', and The Little White Duck.
