Golden Globes Awards Tighten Up Their Act

#1 Post by silverscreenselect » Sun Jan 07, 2024 11:06 pm

The Golden Globes are under new management this year, with tighter standards for selecting those eligible to vote and a more streamlined show. In the past, it's often been one big boozefest with the host doing a running exchange of jokes with notables in the audience like Jack Nicholson. This year was the first that the show was produced by Dick Clark Productions, and it was a lot more professional. The host, Jo Koi, gave about a five minute monologue and was pretty much gone for the rest of the evening. The presenters for the awards made a couple of badly scripted jokes but things kept moving fairly quickly.

Missing this year were the two lifetime achievement awards, the Carol Burnett Award for TV and the Cecil B. DeMille Award for movies. The producers say the tributes will return next year. Also missing for several years now is an in memoriam segment. Instead, the Globes hosts a Memorial Tribute on its website to those who died recently.

I'm sure Spock will be thrilled to know that Oppenheimer was the big winner: Best Picture (drama; they have separate drama and comedy categories); Best Actor-Cillian Murphy; Best Supporing Actor-Robert Downey, Jr.; Best Director (Christopher Nolan); Best Score. Succession was the big winner on TV.
