Fireball's Fantastic 500 (2024 Edition) -- 1960s

Yes, it is finally time to begin that journey through my vast musical collection. With no real games being played on this forum during the past five years, no real games slated to be played on this forum anytime soon, and nobody desiring to play any real games on this forum anytime soon, it's bloody boring and we need music to spice things up around here.

Naturally, the first part of my series will focus on the oldest songs of my list and 1962 is as far back as I go. Back in 2018, my list included 19 songs from the 1960s. That number has gone down to 15 songs this time around. Three songs will debut on my list a little later, but here are the seven songs from my old list that fell out:

#19. Standing in the Shadows of Love, the Four Tops (1966)
#18. Spinning Wheel, Blood, Sweat & Tears (1969)
#17. Dream a Little Dream of Me, Mama Cass Elliot (1968)
#16. Sunny, Bobby Hebb (1966)
#15. I Can't Get Next to You, the Temptations (1969)
#14. I Want You Back, the Jackson 5 (1969)
#13. Up, Up and Away, the 5th Dimension (1967)

And now, here comes my updated 1960s countdown!

#15. Love Is Blue, Paul Mauriat (1967) -- #10 in 2018

One of the all-time great instrumentals has dropped to the bottom of my list, so there's a chance that it may drop out completely on a future Fantastic 500.

#14. Something's Got a Hold on Me, Etta James (1962) -- NEW!

I've been hearing this song a lot on the television over the past couple of years, and it has had a hold on my brain ever since.

#13. Something, the Beatles (1969) -- #7 in 2018

Even with the Beatles' recent increase in popularity--thanks to the 2021 documentary directed by Peter Jackson and the release of the previously unreleased single "Now and Then" just a few weeks ago--it hasn't stopped this classic tune from slipping on my list.

#12. Make Your Own Kind of Music, Mama Cass Elliot (1969) -- NEW!

Strangely, this song directly replaced "Dream a Little Dream of Me"--another Mama Cass song--on my list.

#11. You've Really Got a Hold on Me, Smokey Robinson & the Miracles (1962) -- #12 in 2018

With other songs dropping off, that helped this one move up a single position.

#10. Build Me Up Buttercup, the Foundations (1968) -- #11 in 2018

Request granted. You've been built up one spot.

#9. Yakety Sax, Boots Randolph (1963) -- #9 in 2018

Reruns of "The Benny Hill Show" were acquired by Antenna TV about two years ago, marking the first time that the show has been rerun in the United States since those reruns aired in the early days of Comedy Central. With the current #MeToo era, Benny Hill reruns aren't as funny to me now as they were when I was an immature kid who didn't know any better. Despite that, the closing theme is holding its own on my list.

#8. Sunshine Superman, Donovan (1966) -- #4 in 2018

#7. My Cherie Amour, Stevie Wonder (1969) -- #5 in 2018

#6. Harper Valley P.T.A., Jeannie C. Riley (1968) -- NEW!

I wouldn't mind seeing a rewrite of this song emerge during the 2024 campaign, as people like Jamie Comer and Gym Jordan come off as the hypocrites who made up the P.T.A. depicted here.

#5. It's Getting Better, Mama Cass Elliot (1969) -- #8 in 2018

This song is indeed getting better on my list.

#4. Honky Tonk Women, the Rolling Stones (1969) -- #6 in 2018

Of all of the 1960s songs on my list, this was the one that I least expected to go up in ranking. I cannot explain why this song jumped ahead of "Sunshine Superman" and "My Cherie Amour".

And my top three is unchanged.

#3. Daydream, the Lovin' Spoonful (1966) -- #3 in 2018

#2. The House of the Rising Sun, the Animals (1964) -- #2 in 2018

#1. Black Pearl, Sonny Charles & the Checkmates, Ltd. (1969) -- #1 in 2018

I'll be back soon with the first part of my 1970s collection.
"[Drumpf's] name alone creates division and anger, whose words inspire dissension and hatred, and can't possibly 'Make America Great Again.'" --Kobe Bryant (1978-2020)

"In times of crisis, the wise build bridges. The foolish build barriers." --Chadwick Boseman (1976-2020)
