Odd Suicide Story

There is a musical group called My Chemical Romance. Apparently a bunch of kids are planning on marching against a newspaper because they are upset about the band's depiction in the media.
The newspaper has recently dubbed My Chemical Romance a 'suicide cult' band in its coverage of the suicide of 13-year-old emo Hannah Bond.

So here is the odd thing.
Some messages are being sent around MySpace indicating that kids are planning on killing themselves to protest the group being called a "suicide cult."
My Chemical Romance fans are planning a mass suicide on day of the London march against the Daily Mail, which takes place on Saturday, May 31st in London. You remember, the Daily Mail--they called MCR fans a ’cult’, or a ’suicide cult’ to be more accurate.
These fans are fed up and feel as if suicide is the only resolution to this.
But, SUICIDE IS NOT THE ANSWER. SUICIDE IS NEVER THE ANSWER.
THIS NEEDS TO BE STOPPED.
If something like this were to happen, the name ’My Chemical Romance’ would be tarnished forever, and this time for a reason that could be proved.
Once again, IT NEEDS TO BE STOPPED.
Anyone who’s reading this, POST THIS! KEEP POSTING IT! AGAIN AND AGAIN! PLEASE!!

The goths were bad enough, but this . . . aargh!
That emo emu is a sign of normalization of gloom, despondency, and self-mutilation.
I guess I'd rather have kids cutting themselves than killing themselves, but holy cow -- why does it have to be so hard to be a cheerful kid?

I just think that teenagers have so many hormones and so little control over their lives that they don't know how to deal with things and they get depressed.

That is why they should be constantly worked to the point of exhaustion, whether it be outside activities or a job. Don't give 'em enough time or energy to think about getting in trouble or being depressed.
Worked for me!

There are plenty of chimneys that need to swept! I know those little urchins can climb on a roof by the time they're 6 years old, and if they love dressing up in black, the soot will save them the trouble and expense of buying a new wardrobe. Let's repeal all those ridiculous child labor laws and I guarantee you they'll all be too tired by the end of the day to cut themselves....

It's working for me as well.
Between Drama, Mock Trial and Quiz Bowl, Maddie had very little time to contemplate the angst of being a teenager.

I went to a parents presentation at my daughter's Jr. High. It was on Emo.
I had no clue.
It is kids crying out because they don't know how to deal with life. It is not a cry for help as most self mutilation is hidden. It is a way to deal privately with emothional hurt by making the physical body hurt more. Physical pain is easier to deal with and masks the emotional pain. The problem is it can be emotionally addicting.
Some of it I suspect is because kids have been too protected from disappointment, and some because their parents care more about themselves than their kids, or the parents don't know how to deal with the kids so they just don't.

Your daughter's school has no idea what they're talking about!
Emo is a style of music that can be defined as post-Punk. The themes of the music tend to be emotional including angsty. Some of its fans may dress and style their hair in a certain way (tight jeans and hair over one eye).
There is absolutely no correlation between Emo fans and self-mutilation! To assume Emo fans self-mutilate or to assume those who are not fans do not self-mutilate would be doing both a grave disservice. That would be like saying all jazz fans smoke pot and those those aren't fans don''t.

I wouldn't say there's no correlation (between emo and cutting) but there are lots of emo kids who don't -- way more than do.
My daughter leans toward the emo, so I keep an eye out. She has friends who do. But she makes fun of kids who are TOO emo. In fact, she makes fun of me when I play some of my old sad music, folk and country mostly.
That said, I gotta agree that the folks at BiT's kids' school are probably over-reacting. It's normal for kids, or at least some kids (esp the intelligent and/or artistic ones) to go thru a certain amount of angst and express it in ways that are purposely designed to freak out their parents.

I'm guessing that the folks at BiT's school know exactly what they're talking about and that they're not overreacting.
