The Right Stuff Casting is Kind of Amusing

Re-watching "The Right Stuff" after many years and I can't help but get a chuckle out of the casting.
FTR-I think the casting was awesome BUT the funny part to me is:
1) You have Sam Shepard playing "Chuck Yeager"
Then you have
2) Scott Glenn playing "Alan Shepard
And then
3) Ed Harris playing "John Glenn"
It is all a little confusing at first glance
