I usually let others handle the RIP notifications, but this one cuts deep. I just got home about 30 minutes ago, (relax, Grandma, I was at midnight bingo) and saw the news just as it appeared.
I really love Jimmy Buffett, even though I'm not into beaches or island type culture and I really can't stand Margaritaville. But I love just about everything else he's ever done and not a week or two goes bye that I don't randomly break out singing Pencil Thin Moustache at least once or twice.
I don't think he posts here anymore, but I recall that Snoopy (tanstaafl) was quite the Parrothead and I feel for him in this moment.

He must have been booked for the ultimate Labor Day week-end show.
I agrre totally with Earl. I know his music is not the deepest most intellectual stuff, but it was always just plain fun. And I love how he took the public image of a laid back beach bum and parlayed it into a huge business empire so he really could just hang out on the beach and always looked like he was having a ball doing it.

Just what I didn't need to wake up to on a holiday weekend. According to his obituary, he was 76, but I thought of him as perpetually middle-aged. A few years back, Mrs. SSS and I had dinner at his Cheeseburger in Paradise restaurant. The chain was short-lived, and the food was standard bar food fare, but we got to hear an hour of his music on the PA system and had a lot of fun. You can't help but feel better when listening to Margaritaville.

Yeah, this one hurts. Never saw him in person-but had it on the bucket list.
I remember reading in (one of?) his memoirs that a geography professor wanted to develop a course based on his songs.
A phrase from his book runs through my head quite often.
"Boys from the barrios of Bogota and Baranquilla where life is cheap."

Damn! I had all his albums on cassettes and played them back-to-back on my cross-country trips. I saw him live three times. Once was in Sacramento when he had a cast on his leg; it was rumored a coke dealer broke it.
I feel a new song coming on.

Another anecdote from his memoir that I have chuckled at over the years was from when he ran into a couple named Hans and Helga(or something similar) that were running an inn in the central hills of some Caribbean island. He described as being straight out of central casting as Nazis in hiding after the war.
The phrase that I think of over the years is "So, what did you do in the War, Hans?" He didn't ask him-just mentally asked it.

He died from Merkel cell carcinoma. Long-term sun exposure increases the risk of getting it.

I was only a casual fan until this classic appearance (including 2 songs) on Letterman:
Until then, I knew of the other songs, but I didn't realize he was the guy who wrote & sang "Come Monday." In the clip (about the halfway point), he talks about how that song saved his life.
A friend who was a big fan got a group of us together to see him at Irvine Meadows. Best tailgate party ever!
