The current champion, Larissa Kelly, set the 3-day winnings record yesterday: $108,600.

And she was off her pace yesterday, having faced two very good opponents.

Her husband is a KJL.

What I've noticed is how soft-spoken and low-key she is. She doesn't display any of the excitement and energy that would get her past a SyndieBAM AP.

Larissa's husband, Jeff Hoppes, is the Kevin Bacon of Jeopardy.

Not only is he a KJL and married to Larissa, he also played high school quiz bowl with Brad Rutter. He played college QB with David Madden, with whom he is still friends. He also took one of his graduate classes at Berkeley under Dan Melia.

I think I saw where her sister has also been on J!

No time this morning to go check that fact, so ignore it if I'm wrong.

I was able to tune into J today while doing some shutting-down tasks at school. (students left yesterday) It was quite a nice episode, especially since I haven't seen one since spring break.

I saw the last part of her first win.

I said it would suck to have 18800 going into FJ and have no chance to win - that was the returning champ's total. But she was a RC so she must've done OK the day(s) before.

I've been watching Larissa's run. She's SMART. I can see why they picked her-she must have done well on the tests. Every time she makes a big bet on a Daily Double, I wonder if she'll miss it-that hasn't happened too often!

We'll see HER in the ToC for sure.

I just went through the entire Jeopardy Archive for this entire season. Unless someone moved out of the Texas/Oklahoma/Louisiana triangle, only one person from my session has made it on air. Jeanne Juneau.

There was a retired Vice Detective from New Orleans who I thought was a lock.

I don't watch it much these days, I'm rarely home at air time.

If this keeps up, maybe I'll start taping it.

In the interview segment of her first show, Alex asked her about her interesting collection of armadillos (and giant, prehistoric precursors to armadillos!) Alex wondered where you would get a figurine of a prehistoric armadillo precursor, and Larissa said the Museum of Natural History in London -- where her husband has worked -- sells stuffed glyptodonts!



Glyptodonts are prehistoric giant armadillo ancestors from South America. Alex asked how many she had, & she told him right now she has
10! Whether that's 10 glyptodonts or just 10 armadillos in general, I'm not quite sure.

But, really -- 10??? My sister Ro (lurker & occasional poster on the old Go Bored) has hundreds of armadillos, possibly thousands! Way too many to count, anyway Including a glyptodont or 2. Sorry, but "10" just doesn't impress us much!

Larissa's great otherwise, though. If she wants to meet a fellow Dillo Diva & trivia maven, send her our way.

But Larissa wasn't trying to impress your and your sister. The only person she needed to impress was the contestant coordinator, and 10 was apparently just the right number for doing that. Contestant coordinators are notoriously leery of auditioners with over 1000 armadillos.

I personally have one armadillo in my house, that I know of. It's a roughly life-sized carved wooden one that was given to me by a friend about 20 years ago.

The contestant coordinators seemed impressed that I did Sidewalk Astronomy with John Dobson (inventor of the Dobsonian telescope), who was 90 years old at the time. And that I ran a couple of categories in my practice game (including the dreaded Before and After!)

But they still didn't call me (Yet!)

I think you are correct. I also read earlier in the week that her sister--I think her name is Arianna?--was also a Jeopardy! contestant. Actually, I think her appearance was just a few months ago.

OK, I saw it now! I don't have any from the Far East (Rosemary didn't buy me any on her trips to India or Nepal -- although she did bring me a lovely Pashmina Shawl that I use all the time! And a nice sari for Leah. And some Gurkha Knives. But no snowglobes. None from Baghdad either.)

I guess my most "exotic" globes -- or at least the oldest! -- are the ones I got in Montreal when we went to Expo '67. I was 8 or 9 at the time, when I started collecting.
