Former US Senator from New York and older brother of author William F. Buckley. James ran as the Conservative Party candidate (back when New York had Liberal and Conservative parties) in 1970 against incumbent Republican Charles Goodell (father of NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell) and Democrat Richard Ottinger. Goodell had been appointed to fill the remaining term of Robert F. Kennedy after his assassination. Buckley served one term and later became a judge on the DC Circuit Court of Appeals.
