Cauliflower "rice" or cauliflower "pizza crust" wasn't bad enough? Apparently not.
I just read a recipe on FB for "apple" pie, made with ...
Zucchini in place of the apples. "Tastes just like apple pie!"
You know what tastes like apples? Freaking apples.
Cranky post of the day accomplished already.

Some vegans are apparently so radical they wonβt eat fruits. Just vegetables.

Jeff eats apples every day. Their shrill keening screams follow me eternally.

I took Mrs. SSS to see
Jules the other day. It's kind of like
E.T. with senior citizens instead of kids. Ben Kingsley plays an old man who's beginning to get some form of dementia, and his daughter wants to put him in a home (this part of the film was very personal to me). He finds some purpose in his life when a spaceship crashes in his backyard. The alien looks like a ten-year-old boy with no hair and no ears who doesn't talk but is friendly. Kingsley tries to help the alien repair his ship before the government agents who tracked the ship initially can find him. He's helped by two other senior citizens, one played by Jane Curtin.
The reason I mention this is that the alien only eats apples, so Kingsley and friends keep going to the supermarket to buy massive amounts of apples, which has his daughter worried that he's losing his mind even quicker.
It's a cute movie and the apple thread made me think of it.

I often have cauliflower "rice" or "grits" for dinner. I hate it plain, but I love the "rice" and "grits".

Me too. I thought she was great as the medical examiner in "Unforgettable." Between this, "Coneheads" and "Third Rock from the Sun," she has found a niche.
What sss didn't mention is that the other neighbor is played by Harriet Sansom Harris, who has TONS of credits, but was especially funny as Frasier's manager, Bebe Glazer.

I confess. I have done this.
TLAF made a kick-ass apple pie in her day. With real apples.
In his retirement, my father turned a tiny NE Philly backyard into a fine garden - flowers on one side and tomatoes, zucchini and eggplant on the other side.
He died in 1983. For the next three summers, there was an abundance of zucchini.
I came home from California to see mom. Made lots and lots of zucchini bread. Gave away zucchini, too.
Then, a friend from Weight Watchers suggested to mom that she use some for a mock apple pie.
It was a very nice dessert. But it was NOT apple pie.

It's not a substitute for apple or anything, but I have always been suspicious of rhubarb pie. Like, when you look at rhubarb, it is green stalks of something starchy. I get that apples are starchy, too, but what the hell? And doesn't rhubarb grow, like, UNDERGROUND?
I was brought up not to criticize other peoples' food choices, and that is exactly what I am doing here, but y'all who like it, you eat all the rhubarb pie, because it is safe. from. me.

Rhubarb grows above ground, much like celery. The leaves are poisonous to dogs and humans.

I would be a little leary to try mock pulled pork with Long Pig. But that is just me.

Rhubarb is the tits! You people don't know the value! (Mel Brooks reference for the cool people amongst you)
My grandma had a long, narrow garden that ran along the entire side of the garage dedicated to rhubarb. I really miss having as much rhubarb as I possibly can. I have a friend that has a big rhubarb patch, but I haven't seen her for a while. She offered to give me cuttings several times, but I didn't have the patience. Rhubarb takes a couple of years to mature and then it goes fucking crazy! Yes, I realize that if I'd taken her up on it back then, I'd have it now, but I have a certified black thumb. I once killed an aloe vera plant so, if anybody could fail to grow rhubarb, it would be me.
It is like tofu in that it tends to take on the flavour of whatever it's added to, which makes it so versatile. Strawberry rhubarb is good, but try blueberry rhubarb, it's out of this world! I have a recipe for rhubarb cake from my grandma that I still make for the family and it's a huge hit, especially in the winter. It's a coffee cake type and the rhubarb makes it so moist. I defy anybody to make this recipe and still declare a dislike for rhubarb! (Available upon request)
As Vandal said, the leaves are poisonous so dispose of them and put the bag in the outside trash immediately if you have animals that are interested in any leafy remains that are lying about.

We always had cats around, may be why we never ate this. I pledge to try it next time we visit the meat-and-three (itβs an entree and two veggies, but cornbread counts as a side, somehow).

Unfortunate coincidence, as aloe vera is an excellent treatment for black thumb!

Rhubarb anything is only as good as all the sugar you throw in trying to make it edible.
Local wineries around these parts make rhubarb wine, and it's surprisingly tolerable (again, sugar...)

Piker. I can kill silk plants, and plastic flowers tremble...
