Pennsylvania Republicans are notoriously inept at social media messaging. In the 2022 election, Fetterman's campaign skewered Oz online while the candidate himself was sidelined, and Oz, with posts such as his crudité video, looked like an out-of-touch, out-of-state elitist. This week, Gov. Shapiro and GOP legislators worked out a budget that includes vouchers for private and religious schools. It drew heavy criticism from Democrats and their teacher's union allies. (Shapiro may be influenced by fond memories of his own Hebrew high school education.) So Republicans in the House posted this tweet to illustrate the wide support for vouchers:
They represent their opponents as Tom Hanks, one of America's most popular actors. Their side is denoted by a Nazi tank.
Another FAIL: In
Saving Private Ryan, Hanks destroys the tank.
Shapiro's response:
Matthew Bonder wrote:Invoking Nazis to try and make a political point is abhorrent and repulsive – but if you're stupid enough to do it anyway, keep Governor Shapiro's name out of it.
The Governor will continue working to defeat this type of hate and bigotry anytime it shows itself in our politics.
The Pennsylvania Freedom Caucus then replaced the image with:
I suppose Johnny Depp isn't nearly as beloved as Hanks.
