Former NFL QB Ryan Mallett drowns in Florida
UPDATE: Deltaplex News has confirmed the incident that happen which led to the death of White Hall head football coach Ryan Mallett happened in the Destin, Florida area.
Media sources in Destin tell Deltaplex News that Mallett and 9-12 other people are believed to have been caught in a rip current. Everyone but Mallett was able to reach a sandbar to safely get out of the water. Mallett was swept under the water.
Lifeguards were able to get to Mallett, however he was not breathing when he was recovered. He was rushed to a local hospital where he was pronounced deceased.
The Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office confirmed the news on their Facebook page, saying first responders were called to the beach behind 775 Gulf Shore Drive in Destin around 2:12 p.m ET.
“A group of people in the water near the second sandbar had reportedly been struggling to make their way back to shore,” the report stated. “One of the individuals, an adult male (Mallett), went under and lifeguards say he was not breathing when pulled out. Lifesaving measures were immediately undertaken but the man was pronounced deceased at the Destin Emergency Room.”

I was in Destin in '96 with my wife, her sister Karen, her wife's husband and some of his family. One day Karen, my wife, and I were out swimming, maybe 50 yards out in about 8 ft of water when we three and an unknown heavyset lady got caught in a rip current. My wife, I and Karen, growing up going to the beach in Galveston knew what to do, but that lady didn't. She panicked and grabbed Karen, nearly drowning her until we got to that 2nd sandbar. It took us a while to calm the lady down and to get her to move horizontal to the beach while walking on the sandbar where we could easily swim back.
I'm sure Mallett was a strong swimmer and wonder if he panicked or someone near him did and took him under.

One Thanksgiving, when I lived in Fayetteville, Arkansas, my wife needed me to go to the convenience store to get something she needed for dinner. When I was in line for the checkout, a very tall guy got in line behind me. I recognised him. That year the Razorback Football team was actually good. I recognized the guy behind me as their quarterback. So I looked at him and said "Are you Ryan Mallet?"
He said "hahaha yeah".

I can't stand to live in my county, which is entirely controlled by a democrat machine. But I'm not going to move away. It is interesting to me that on one side of an arbitrary political boundary, all of the local and county elected positions are firmly held by democrats, and on the other side it is much more evenly divided. That is another reason that pushed me into getting involved in the effort to break that machine.
