Tony Awards observations

The opening number with zero words was very cool, honoring the deal struck by the WGA and the theatre folks to go unscripted.

Sean Hayes winning Best Lead Actor in a Play (in a play I have heard is not so great) was not a good look, with the four other Black nominees in the audience trying not to have facial expressions that said, “What else do we have to do?”

Nathan Lane can still bring it. Without any scripted banter, nearly everyone just introduced themselves and said what the category was, but he smirked in that way only he can, “Is it hot in here, or is it just the Tonys?” If anyone else had tried that line, it would have fallen flat, but somehow he made it funny.

Well, it is Pride month in the Year of the Transgendered.

Sexuality trumps talent and race at the Tonys

For what it's worth, two of the other four nominated actors, Corey Hawkins and Wendell Pierce, have never been linked romantically or sexually with anyone and have both been the subject of internet speculation whether they are gay.

Speculation by bigots…”They are actors, never been romantically linked to anyone, must be gay! Hopefully they’re gay. That’d be great!” bigots.

Regardless, if they are not loud and proud, they don’t get credit.

Well said. I couldn't figure out how to say how irrelevant that statement was.

I didn't know I was supposed to defend or explain my observations. I thought the word observations indicated it's what I saw, and what I saw was some folks who thought it might finally, finally be their turn.

But mostly, I wanted to celebrate the opening number as a brilliant solution to a legitimate problem (the writers' strike).

No good observation goes unremarked upon...
