Religion in Public Education in Texas

The Texas State Senate has passed a bill requiring all public schools to display the Ten Commandments in every classroom in a size and typeface that is legible to a person of average vision everywhere in the classroom. If the House adopts it, the requirement would take effect at the beginning of the next school year. The sponsor says it will restore religious liberties that were lost and "reminds students all across Texas of the importance of a fundamental foundation” of America. Another bill was passed that would require schools to allow time for students and employees to pray and read the Bible on every school day. Said Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick: “Bringing the Ten Commandments and prayer back to our public schools will enable our students to become better Texans.”

For what it's worth, the Supreme Court in 1980 ruled that a similar Kentucky law violated the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment. I'm sure they have similar laws in Iran.

If I were teaching in Texas, I would label them the ten Commandments of Christianity and Judaism, and right next to them also post the Five Pillars of Islam, the The Five Precepts of Buddhism, the Ten Disciplines of Hinduism and any other similar lists I could find.

Here in North Carolina, the Republicans in both houses of the state legislature now have a veto-proof supermajority against our Democratic governor, and so I am expecting that laws restricting what and how we can teach are going to come down the pike and I am going to have some hard choices to make since I am only 2 years away from full vestment in my retirement.

Tiptoe around things for a year (it will take most of a year for them to get anything actually into the classroom). I think I will be done at UNC Charlotte by the end of 2023-24 academic year, so I will be doing much the same, though I don't have a vesting situation like you do.

I am a Christian. However, unless state's rights supercede establishment clause of Congress, I disagree with this bill. As kroxquo said post everybody's, which would allow satanists, or anyone claiming to have commandments to complain,etc.
