Warner Bros. Discovery Inc. is close to a deal for a new online TV series based on Harry Potter, the best-selling young adult books, according to two people with knowledge of the matter.

Each season of the series will be based on one of JK Rowling’s seven books, said the people, who asked not to be identified since the deal hasn’t been announced, suggesting years of fresh fare from the popular stories.

The company is hoping the series can be one cornerstore of a new streaming strategy that will be announced next week by HBO’s parent, Warner Bros. That company’s chief executive officer, David Zaslav, and HBO chief Casey Bloys have worked to convince Rowling to produce a new series that will debut on HBO and online, but the deal hasn’t been completed.

And the visit to St. Mungo's and S.P.E.W., and... and...so much more - maybe the new Harry will actually have green eyes...

Harry Potter Series at HBO Finds Its Showrunner and Director

HBO‘s long-developing Harry Potter series has locked in two key members of its creative team.

The series has named Francesca Gardiner as its writer and showrunner and tapped Mark Mylod to direct multiple episodes. Both are Emmy winners for HBO’s Succession — Gardiner as part of the show’s producing team and Mylod as both director and producer.

Gardiner’s credits as a writer and producer also include His Dark Materials at HBO, Killing Eve at BBC America and The Rook at Starz. Mylod has directed episodes of Game of Thrones and the upcoming second season of The Last of Us for HBO, as well as feature film The Menu and Showtime’s Shameless and The Affair, among others.

The writing team for HBO’s reboot adaptation of Harry Potter has extended past Francesca Gardiner and Mark Mylod.

New Writers Room For ‘Harry Potter’

A collection of new listings found on the Writers Guild of America website indicates that Laura Neal, Andy Greenwald, and Josephine Gardiner have been onboarded onto the writer’s room of the HBO Original Series Harry Potter.

Laura Neal’s previous credits include episodes of Season 3 and 4 of BBC’s Killing Eve; and Season 1 Episode 4 of Netflix’s Sex Education. Neal is represented by United Agents UK and managed by Grandview LA.

Andy Greenwald’s previous credits include a lead writer role on 7 episodes of FX’s first season of Legion, and an executive-producer credit for USA Network’s Briarpatch. Greenwald is represented by UTA.

Josephine Gardiner seems to be a relative of showrunner Francesca Gardiner. The WGA website lists this series as her only television credit. She is managed by LARK.

Taken from another site..

There's been some recent movement on this as of late, with the showrunners letting some plot details out and some casting rumors making their way around:

-S1 will film next summer for a late '26, early '27 release
-32,000 actors have been auditioned for the three main roles
-Show will try and target actors closer to the canonical ages for the characters (i.e Snape will be in his early 30's and the Dursleys will be much younger than the films)
-Mark Strong is being considered alongside Mark Rylance for Dumbledore (still needs more whimsy)
-British TV and theatre vet Paapa Essiedu is being considered for Snape
-Sharon Horgan and Rachel Weisz being considered for McGonagall (the Deadline piece seems to see Weisz as a stretch)
-Brett Goldstein (Ted Lasso) being considered for Hagrid

‘Harry Potter’ HBO Series Eyes John Lithgow to Play Dumbledore

John Lithgow is in final talks to play Albus Dumbledore in HBO’s upcoming adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s “Harry Potter” books.

Variety has confirmed Lithgow’s contention for the role with sources, though HBO commented: “We appreciate that such a high-profile series will draw a lot of rumor and speculation. As we make our way through pre-production, we will only confirm details as we finalize deals.”

Nick Frost is expected to play Hagrid in the new series. He's best known as Simon Pegg's partner in Shaun of the Dead and other movies. Janet McTeer will play Minerva McGonagall. Frost strikes me as a good choice, McTeer not so good. She's over six feet tall, playing the role Maggie Smith played in the films. Also, relatively unknown British TV actor Paapa Essiedu will play Snape.
