Last Thursday, about 4:30, our internet and landline went out. And, since we've now got television through the internet that went out too. All I had was my flipphone cellphone. Just came back on. I feel the world has passed me by.

I work from home, so when mine goes out, it's much worse. I do have a cellular hotspot for backup, but it's slow.

I kept calling and calling and getting recordings which told me they would run some tests. Not surprisingly, the tests said that the internet was down. But they actually called me twice and I spoke to their agents three times (I called multiple times a day). The last time I spoke to anyone was yesterday, and the guy put me on hold for several minutes and came back and said that they had found that underground cable had broken but they should have it fixed in a day or so. Today, I saw trucks at the end of our block and they had dug a hole and were playing with the cable wires. A couple of hours later, it was working again. It only took them six days and me pestering them almost every day.

I'm getting new internet today. AT&T Fiber, 1 Gig. It was one of the selling points to the new neighborhood, since it is out in the boonies. Most places around here require a more expensive and slower line of site microwave dish type of connection.
They didn't have the fiber ready when we moved in so I worked from the old place for a few days because my cell phone (all AT&T) connection was too poor to tether to. A neighbor got a T-Mobile 5G hotspot for $50/month. So I got that as well, that first week. It's been pretty good. Only get 1 bar 5G but enought to get me 30-100 Mbps down and 10 Mbps up. Not super great for working from home, and streaming sometimes will pixelate but not bad, either.
A week after I got the T-Mobile device I got a notice from AT&T that the fiber was available. I didn't want to just cancel the T-mobile so early as they did provide a good service when none was available. Plus AT&T had not completed the monthly cycle on my previous fiber account so I couldn't schedule connection online and be eligible for the $300 promotional gift card. So I waited until the account cleared and I could schedule the service and connection online and be eligible for the gift card.
I am a little nervous about it though. If it goes down, I'm pretty much dead in the water. Where I was, I could always tether to my phone as a backup. Hopefully AT&T will upgrade the cell service here in the near future.
I will likely keep the T-moble device and service for a few weeks just for some comfort.

Since I have clients that pay me by the hour, an internet connection is essential. I bought one of these several years ago. I just checked, and there are similar devices that are probably improved from this.

This costs less and seems to be better, but it uses a prepaid account:

If you have $800, the Netgear Nighthawk M6 can give you a 2.5Gps download speed.
