The problem, then, is that such calls do not address an opposition audience so much as they signal virtue. They talk past those who need convincing. They ignore actual facts and counterargument. And they are irreparably smug.

A small, globe-trotting balloon declared “missing in action” by an Illinois-based hobbyist club on Feb. 15 has emerged as a candidate to explain one of the three mystery objects shot down by four heat-seeking missiles launched by U.S. Air Force fighters since Feb. 10.
I'd wager the club's globe-troting balloon did not have any heat signature to attrack such missles. So right there something doesn't make sense.

The AIM-9X is not heat-seeking. They were made by Raytheon here in Tucson. They aren't making them anymore; they've been superseded.
