What, is it over already? Yes, it's time for the 25th and final game of the 2023 LSWE. This season really seemed to fly by this time, maybe because for the first time since my 50-game days I was actually halfway prepared and only had to come up with games on the fly a few times. A lesson I'm sure I won't take to heart for next year....
So for the finale, since I don't really have any good sources of random pop music to cull songs from anymore... I decided to try something a bit more methodical, but almost as random. Since I have a good source for Billboard Top 40 charts from the past, I went back to the second week of February for each year over a 25 year time period and picked out the song that was in the #13 slot that week. I chose 1966-1990 as the quarter century for this game since it probably best represents the songs the LSWE uses and my players know. The game starts with the #13 hit at this time in 1966 and continues in chronological order with the final song being from 1990. Each of these songs below was at the very least a Top 13 hit at one time, so though undoubtedly some of these songs have faded into obscurity, they were big on the radio in their day. One of these songs is a cover of a much better known version that preceded it, so you get a bonus point if you answer with the correct artist for it...
I hope you've all enjoyed playing the LSWE as much as I've enjoyed presenting it to you this year!
1 point for the title, 1 point for the artist...
1. 'Cause he gets up in the morning,
And he goes to work at nine,
And he comes back home at five-thirty,
Gets the same train every time.
2. The old house is still standing
Though the paint is cracked and dry
And there's that old oak tree that I used to play on
3. If I had told her that I loved her
She would have stayed til who knows when,
but I guess she couldn't understand it
when I said I wanna be your friend,
4. I started to cry
Which started the whole world laughing
5. When you're down and out
When you're on the street
When evening falls so hard
I will comfort you
6. I don't know how in the world
To stop thinking of him
'Cause I still love him so
I end each day the way I start out
Crying my heart out
7. We can never know about the days to come
But we think about them anyway
And I wonder if I'm really with you now
Or just chasin' after some finer day
8. If you're out on a date
And you bring it home late it's a sin
9. We've got to pray for all
The brothers under thine hand
Pray for all the sisters
That's doing the best she can
10. Lost and alone on some forgotten highway
Traveled by many, remembered by few
Lookin' for something that I can believe in
Lookin' for something that I'd like to do with my life
11. Some fools think of happiness
Blissfulness, togetherness
Some fools fool themselves, I guess
They're not foolin' me
12. Last night I waved goodbye now it seems years
I'm back in the city where nothing is clear
But thoughts of me holding you bringing us near
13. When I see your face like the mornin' Sun you spark me to shine
Tell all the world my need is fulfilled and that's a new design
14. Stopped at Third and Forty-three, exit to the night
It's gonna be ecstasy, this place was meant for me
I feel so good tonight
15. Oh I could hide 'neath the wings
Of the blue bird as she sings
16. It's such a crazy old town
It can drag you down
'Til you run out of dreams
So you party all night to the music and lights
But you don't know what happiness means
17. Don't need a whore, I don't need no booze
Don't need a virgin priest
But I need someone I can cry to
I need someone to protect
18. This generation
Rules the nation
With version
19. But when the music changed, the plan was re-arranged
He went to dance with someone else.
20. And I know, yes I know that its plain to see
We're so in love when we're together
Now I know, that I need you here with me
From tonight until the end of time
21. We all want the stuff that's found in our wildest dreams
It gets kinda rough in the back of our limousine
22. You take your road, I'll take mine
The paths have both been beat (yeah)
Searchin' for a change of pace
Love needs to be sweetened
23. I can feel the soft silk of your blouse
And them soft thrills in our little fun house
Then the lights go out and it's just the three of us
You me and all that stuff we're so scared of
24. 'Cause when I think about your loving
Then I get a good beat
I get excited from the feeling
That it's giving to me
So won't you keep it coming baby
'Cause I love the joy you bring
25. Now I don't want to tell you how to live
Don't want to put the blame
But don't you think it's time for you and I
To try to make a change
