Poker Face from Rian Johnson on Peacock

This show recently premiered on Peacock and it stars Natasha Lyonne (Orange Is the New Black and Russian Doll) as Charlie, a wayward soul who has the ability to detect when someone is lying. Rian Johnson (Knives Out) created the series and there's a long list of guest stars including: John Ratzenberger, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Stephanie Hsu, David Castañeda, Dascha Polanco, Ellen Barkin, Chloë Sevigny, Tim Meadows, Jameela Jamil, Judith Light, Nick Nolte, Ron Perlman, Tim Blake Nelson, and Clea DuVall.

The premise is sort of a mix of Kung Fu and Columbo. She goes from place to place and, by happenstance, solves a mystery-of-the-week using her abilities and wits. If you look closely at the credits, you'll notice how similar they are (perhaps pay homage) to Columbo, The Rockford Files and a few others from the 70s, right down to the yellow font and Roman Numeral copyright date. Intentional, I'm sure.

I won't spoil anything, so I'll only say we have enjoyed the first few episodes and look forward to the rest.

I've been watching Outlaws on Amazon Prime. It's a British series, two seasons and 12 episodes. Christopher Walken is the only cast member most people will recognize. He's one of a group of people doing community service for various petty crimes. They stumble across some stolen drug money at a cleanup site and wind up clashing with some nasty drug dealers.

I look forward to Outlaws and also Poker Face. Our backup show for the past month has been ... (try not to snicker) Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman. It's like watching a Hallmark movie of the week, every night.

‘Poker Face’ Renewed for Season 2 at Peacock

Peacock is in for another hand of “Poker Face.” The series, from MRC Television and T-Street, has been renewed for a second season, NBCUniversal’s streamer announced Wednesday morning.

The first season of “Poker Face” debuted on Jan. 26, earning strong reviews for Natasha Lyonne’s lead performance as sleuth Charlie Cale and creator Rian Johnson’s throwback take on the case-of-the-week mystery format. Variety chief television critic Daniel D’Addario praised the series, saying it “allows an established star the time and space to crack a new sort of case, that of how to evolve a familiar persona and bring fans along for the ride.”

The third and undoubtedly final season of Outlaws is out on Amazon Prime. It's five episodes with all the original cast, but Christopher Walken only appears for about five minutes in one episode. Richard E. Grant appears in several episodes as well. Most of the cast are still completing their community service, now on a rundown farm they're renovating. The main storyline involves the major drug dealer, The Dean, they brought down in Season 2, who's got a plan to get out of jail, while the Outlaws try to stop him. It's just as entertaining as the first two seasons and I highly recommend it.

Poker Face Season 2 news:

Following the success of its debut season in January 2023, "Poker Face" swiftly earned a green light for Season 2 from Peacock. However, creator Rian Johnson has hinted at a more extended wait for the next installment. Citing his commitment to the next "Benoit Blanc" movie as a priority, Johnson suggested that Season 2 might not grace screens imminently. With a potential late 2025/early 2026 premiere in the cards, fans will need to exercise patience for the unraveling of "Poker Face's" next chap ..

This is the longest wait since Yellowjackets S3, also due out in 2025. Maybe.
