Republicans in Disarray

For years, the popular theme among the DC press is that Democrats can't get their act together and spend all their time tearing each other down. Today, we get to see Republicans who promised a return to "good" government have their shot at what should be the simplest of tasks, electing a Speaker. For 100 years, the party in control puts forth its choice, they hold an election on party line votes, and then move on. Until today....

Just wait till you see what happens when the Republicans try to do any legislating. The only thing they seem to be capable of is launching bunches of investigations into Hunter Biden and his laptop.

And unlike most of the organized Republican Party (but like the clear majority of the American people), he takes acts of insurrection very, very seriously. His background as a former federal prosecutor probably has something to do with that. Also his history of winning the seat by defeating James Rogan, who was one of the managers of the farcical impeachment of President Clinton.

I'm pretty sure the American people disagree with you about Rep. Schiff. I'm quite certain the people of his District do, and he's got a pretty decent chance (if he chooses to run) of being elected to the Senate in 2024. --Bob

Schiff is partisan, true, but he’s also obviously more qualified than Jordan. He actually has experience as a federal prosecutor, whereas Jordan couldn’t even be bothered to take the bar exam.

On the other hand, Jordan wrestled in college and he was an assistant to a wrestling coach also. But he more or less has been a politician since the mid-90s. While in Ohio State, he participated in a cover-up involving the sexual assault of 170 young men.

Sorry, Bob, but as of 9:00 am, you had no representative. Neither do I (although I'm looking forward to being in John Lewis's old district, now ably represented by Nikema Williams.) Neither does anyone else. That's because until they elect a speaker, they can't swear in any of the Representatives or conduct any business of Congress.

The Pennsylvania Assembly, deadlocked between Democrats and Republicans since November, elected a compromise Speaker.

Other states and countries manage this kind of impasse.

Last year the Senate Democrats, after months of floundering, were able to enact their priorities.

I feel bad for new members’ families, dressed up and waiting for the swearing in ceremony. Get your act together!
