R.I.P.

I loved the Rockford Files. My college roommates and I watched it religiously. I so much liked it, I named my dog I got while in college Rockfish, after Gandy's (played by Isacc Hayes) nickname for Jim Rockford. According to IMDB, Hayes was only on 3 episodes. I would have lost a bet on that, given my attachment to his charater and nickname, I would have sworn he was on the show more than that.

In the mid 70s, NBC was struggling to find shows to include with Columbo and McCloud in its Sunday mystery movie slot, so they decided to adapt Harry Kemelman's popular Rabbi series of mysteries (Friday the Rabbi Slept Late, etc.). Margolin played the rabbi in the pilot episode. In the books, the local chief of police, Lanigan, was like Inspector Japp to Hercule Poirot. But the producers decided the show needed more star power, so they brought in Art Carney as the chief and called the show Lanigan's Rabbi. Naturally, the episodes featured Carney's character much more than the rabbi. Another actor played the rabbi in the regular series, which lasted only four episodes. The whole project was a bad idea from the start, and they managed to squander the talents of both Margolin and Art Carney.

RIP to a very talented and very funny character actor.

I didn't watch much of The Rockford Files, but he was a fixture BitD on Love, American Style.

... Margolin has been a favorite ever since Nichols. I loved every episode and was very disappointed when it didn't renew.

I wrote something longer, but it won't post. I get an error message. I'll try again tomorrow.

It still won't post. I guess I'll go sentence by sentence.

It was a great show, just the offbeat sort of thing that Garner so excelled in. Margot Kidder too, I copied my Kidder RIP post below.

I can't figure it out. I added the next sentence, and it wouldn't go. Here's the error message:

Those are usually a problem with the SQL server, which is on a different server from the web server.
