Hall of Fame reliever, Cy Young winner Bruce Sutter dies

Bruce Sutter, a Hall of Fame reliever and the 1979 National League Cy Young Award winner, has died. He was 69.

Sutter was recently diagnosed with cancer and died Thursday night in hospice, surrounded by his family, one of Sutter's three sons, Chad, told The Associated Press. The Baseball Hall of Fame said Bruce Sutter died in Cartersville, Georgia.

"All our father ever wanted to be remembered as was being a great teammate, but he was so much more than that," a statement from Chad Sutter and the family read. "He was also a great husband to our mother for 50 [years], he was a great father and grandfather and he was a great friend. His love and passion for the game of baseball can only be surpassed by his love and passion for his family."

The only person ever elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame as a player who never appeared in a major-league starting lineup. --Bob

I never got to see him play in person, but I was there when the Cardinals retired his #42 (already retired universally for Jackie Robinson) in 2006 after he was elected to The Hall. And that was all I got to see that day, as the game was rained out and is still the only non-pandemic season game at the current Busch Stadium to be cancelled outright...

A great trivia question would be which player, selected to the Hall of Fame as a player, came to the plate the fewest times in their career....
