Obama judge slaps down Stacey Abrams' election lawsuit in state Biden labeled ‘Jim Crow 2.0’

"Although Georgia’s election system is not perfect, the challenged practices violate neither the constitution nor the VRA," U.S. District Judge Steve Jones, an Obama appointee, wrote, referring to the Voting Rights Act of 1965. He detailed his reasoning in a 288-page order siding against Abrams’ Fair Fight Georgia group in a lawsuit filed four years ago alleging voter suppression and racial discrimination after she narrowly lost to the state’s current Republican Gov. Brian Kemp.

Kemp, who was Georgia Secretary of State when the lawsuit was filed, applauded the ruling as a victory against an attempt by Abrams to weaponize the legal system for political gain.

BTW, that "voter supression" law has resulted in record voter turnout, on both sides.


"Both" sides being the concern of those like Abrams.

This decision was based on the Georgia voting laws from 2018. The changes that were made in response to the 2020 election are the subject of another lawsuit that is still pending. The judge in that suit has deferred a ruling until after the midterm because he felt that any decision would be too disruptive of the process. Early voting in Georgia begins October 17 (it's already started in some states). Absentee ballots, which Mrs. SSS and I have requested, will go out the week before.

And a reminder that Georgia has a 50% rule that a candidate for state or federal office must get over 50% of the vote to avoid a runoff between the top two candidates. Because there are libertarian candidates for all major offices, runoffs for senator or governor are possible. They would be held four weeks after the general election.
