My brother and SIL live just north of Orlando. They have battened down their hatches.

Pea is just south of Tampa which was well north of where Ian came ashore. My co-worker's brother lives in Tamp and said the bay was 9 ft down. Other than wind they were spared the brunt of the storm.

I went to high school in Sarasota, and one summer we lived in a rental house one block from the beach on Siesta Key. Fortunately, we didn't have any really nasty weather that summer. However, I remember that whenever there was a hurricane anywhere in the area, idiots would take the opportunity to go surfing in the really high waves. More recently, my brother's in-laws owned a condo on Longboat Key, to the north of Siesta Key. He and his family spent a number of Christmas vacations there. Sarasota appears to have missed the worst of the storm, which came ashore around Punta Gorda, an hour's drive south of there.
