As one might expect, the headline is bullshit. We are being asked to charge our electric vehicles either before 4:00 p.m. or after 9:00 p.m. in response to a severe heat wave that is anticipated to stress the power system. Death Valley is predicted to record the highest temperature ever recorded on Earth in the month of September.

Our grid is up to the challenge, with some cooperation from our citizens. Now if, like Spock, everyone insists on doing whatever they damn well please when they damn well please, no matter the consequences to those around them, we might have a problem. But I have confidence in my fellow Californians. --Bob

They can still charge their cars for 19 hours out of 24.

Not as bad as this:

How in the Hell is California's Grid going to handle the ever-increasing number of electric cars they are mandating?

California TPTB has announced no sales of non-EV's will be allowed after 2035 or whatever.

So as you jump from 15% EV's or whatever it is today to 75% or whateve- the blackouts will obviously increase-but as we all know-rolling blackouts are a feature (not a bug) of the new "Green World" that we are building.

More wind farms that kill Eagle and Condors?
Other than that, more fossil fuel generating stations.
I guess you could so more solar, too, but in a state that has twenty pages of red tape to cut down a tree and won't allow hyrdro electric because of a garter, putting up that much solar will certainly have unintentional consequences for some creature(s).

California is doubling down on stupid.

And yet California, currently the world's fifth largest economy, continues to grow. I'm hearing we will overtake Germany for fourth place sometime this year. --Bob

No, but our problems are primarily related to the self-inflicted difficulty of building housing here, which is by far the largest driver of California's affordability issues. --Bob

Electric vehicle batteries require precious minerals. That old cellphone may be the solution

You have to recycle a lot of cell phones to get enough lithium and cobalt for an EV.

Pull quote >>> Growing interest in EVs has accelerated the push for valuable minerals like cobalt, nickel and lithium that are extracted from overseas mines at heavy environmental and humanitarian costs. <<<

That's an understatement. Here's what's going on in Spock's beloved Africa:

The truth about the Congolese mines where kids are paid $2-a-day to dig for cobalt

It's no surprise that the mines are Chinese owned and operated.
