Play Ball for 2023

#1 Post by silverscreenselect » Wed Aug 24, 2022 12:09 pm

Major League Baseball released its 2023 schedule today, which features some major changes from previous years. For the first time, each team will play all 29 other teams in the same season. Teams will play a three-game series home or away against 14 teams in the other league. (Thus, every MLB team will play at every stadium at least every two years.) They will play two two-game series against their "natural" rivals (Yankees-Mets, Cubs-White Sox, Dodgers-Angels, etc.). They will only play 13 games against the other teams in their division (unlike the current 19) and six or seven games against the other ten teams in their league. The season will begin on March 30 and end on October 1. The All-Star game will be played July 11 in Seattle. All 30 teams will play on April 15, Jackie Robinson Day (the Dodgers will host the Cubs that day), and September 15, Roberto Clemente Day (the Pirates will host the Yankees that day). The Cubs and Cardinals will play a two-game series in London, June 24-25, but there will not be a Field of Dreams game this year (the Field of Dreams stadium is being renovated). The Phillies and Nationals will play in the Little League World Series game in Williamsport PA on August 20.

The balanced schedule isn't the only major change coming next season. Here are some others:

-- No more shifts and four outfielder alignments. The defensive team must have two infielders on each side of second base with both feet in the dirt. If a team uses an illegal defense (a reviewable call), the team at bat can choose between accepting the results of the play or having an automatic ball called on the batter instead.

-- A 15 second pitch clock with the bases empty and 20 seconds with a runner on base. The catcher must be in position by the 10-second mark, and the batter must be ready to hit by eight seconds. The pitcher must start his motion by the time the clock hits zero. Violations result in a called strike or ball depending on who's at fault. A pickoff attempt or stepping off the mound resets the clock, but...

--Pitchers will be limited to two pickoff or stepoffs in each plate appearance. If a pitcher attempts a third pickoff and is successful, the runner is still out, but an unsuccessful attempt results in a balk call.

--The size of bases increases from 15 to 18 inches.

--If a team has used its five allotted mound visits before the ninth inning, it gets an extra one that inning. Teams that have not used up all their mound visits don't get an extra one.

What is the intended purpose of that?

It makes the stealing of bases much easier.

Will the extra inches at first go to the outfield or towards home plate?

Making the bases larger will make stealing bases slightly easier, but the primary purpose was to reduce the risk of injury from collisions. Most of the changes were intended to either boost offense or speed up the game or both.
