RIP Pete Carril

#1 Post by silverscreenselect » Mon Aug 15, 2022 10:02 pm

Longtime Princeton men's basketball coach who won 13 Ivy League titles and the 1975 NIT, but whose teams were even better known for giving top seeded teams like Georgetown fits in the opening round of the NCAA tournament. After several close calls, they finally defeated UCLA in the 1996 tournament.

Age 92.

I watched so many Carril games, including that great championship at the Garden. A few months later, we elected Pete an honorary member of the Class of 1975.

I missed this news - glad I stopped by. I worked in sports information at Lehigh, where he coached before Princeton. We traveled there once and got beat soundly. Also saw them play Penn at the Palestra in 1981.

He was a great coach, even if a little boring to watch.

Especially so compared to the Big 5 coaches of the era like John Chaney and Rollie Massimino
