Lyrically Speaking 2022 - Day 19
July 21, 2020

Not really a Theme Thursday

Image

Listen up, BBs. It's not Merryman Monday but I thought I would take over today's LS proceedings. Do any of you BBs have a problem with that?

I didn't think so.

Now as I was saying, today's challenge is to read the individual sets of lyrics below and determine the title from these lyrics. All of the songs mentioned below have military or war themes. Some of these are patriotic, some are anti-war, some poke fun at my beloved Marine Corp. Some you have heard a thousand times and had no idea it was a war song. That is because you are weak and played too many video games as a child.

Some lyrics will be difficult and will not know the song title. But you will carry on because you are BBs and BBs never give up.

1 point for the title, 1 point for the artist

1. The soldier blues were trapped on a hillside
The battle raging all around
The sergeant cried, "We've got to hang on, boys!
We've got to hold this piece of ground"
I need a volunteer to ride up
And bring us back some extra men

2. And it's one, two, three, what are we fighting for
Don't ask me I don't give a damn, next stop is Viet Nam
And it's five, six, seven, open up the pearly gates
Ain't no time to wonder why, whoopee we're all gonna die, hey

3. Whistling tunes
We're kissing baboons in the jungle
It's a knockout

4. The Eastern world, it is explodin'
Violence flarin', bullets loadin'
You're old enough to kill but not for votin'
You don't believe in war, but what's that gun you're totin'?
And even the Jordan river has bodies floatin'

5. Hit it
C'mon, ev'rybody's talking about
Ministers, sinisters, banisters and canisters
Bishops and Fishops and Rabbis and Popeyes and bye-bye, bye-byes

6. High on the roof, thin the blood
Another one came on the waves tonight
Comin' in, you're home

7. Here we stand or here we fall
History won't care at all
Make the bed light the light
Lady mercy won't be home tonight yeah

8. Some folks are born silver spoon in hand
Lord, don't they help themselves, Lord?
But when the taxman come to the door
Lord, the house lookin' like a rummage sale, yeah

9. Fighting soldiers from the sky
Fearless men who jump and die
Men who mean just what they say

10. There must be some kind of way outta here
Said the joker to the thief
There's too much confusion
I can't get no relief

11. Got in a little hometown jam
So they put a rifle in my hand
Sent me off to a foreign land
To go and kill the yellow man

12. Now, I don't mind chopping wood
And I don't care if the money's no good
You take what you need
And you leave the rest
But they should never
Have taken the very best

Gunnery Sergeant Hartman
Lyrically Speaking 2022 - Day 19
July 21, 2020

Not really a Theme Thursday

Now as I was saying, today's challenge is to read the individual sets of lyrics below and determine the title from these lyrics. All of the songs mentioned below have military or war themes. Some of these are patriotic, some are anti-war, some poke fun at my beloved Marine Corp. Some you have heard a thousand times and had no idea it was a war song. That is because you are weak and played too many video games as a child.

1 point for the title, 1 point for the artist

1. The soldier blues were trapped on a hillside
The battle raging all around
The sergeant cried, "We've got to hang on, boys!
We've got to hold this piece of ground"
I need a volunteer to ride up
And bring us back some extra men

Billy Don’t Be a Hero - Paper Lace

2. And it's one, two, three, what are we fighting for
Don't ask me I don't give a damn, next stop is Viet Nam
And it's five, six, seven, open up the pearly gates
Ain't no time to wonder why, whoopee we're all gonna die, hey

I-Feel-Like-I'm-Fixin'-to-Die Rag - Country Joe and the Fish

3. Whistling tunes
We're kissing baboons in the jungle
It's a knockout

Games Without Frontiers - Peter Gabriel

4. The Eastern world, it is explodin'
Violence flarin', bullets loadin'
You're old enough to kill but not for votin'
You don't believe in war, but what's that gun you're totin'?
And even the Jordan river has bodies floatin'

Eve of Destruction - The Turtles

5. Hit it
C'mon, ev'rybody's talking about
Ministers, sinisters, banisters and canisters
Bishops and Fishops and Rabbis and Popeyes and bye-bye, bye-byes

Give Peace a Chance - John Lennon

6. High on the roof, thin the blood
Another one came on the waves tonight
Comin' in, you're home

Orange Crush - R.E.M.

7. Here we stand or here we fall
History won't care at all
Make the bed light the light
Lady mercy won't be home tonight yeah

familiar, but nope

8. Some folks are born silver spoon in hand
Lord, don't they help themselves, Lord?
But when the taxman come to the door
Lord, the house lookin' like a rummage sale, yeah

Fortunate Son - CCR

9. Fighting soldiers from the sky
Fearless men who jump and die
Men who mean just what they say

Ballad of the Green Berets -

10. There must be some kind of way outta here

There's too much confusion

All Along the Watchtower - Jimi Hendrix

11. Got in a little hometown jam
So they put a rifle in my hand
Sent me off to a foreign land
To go and kill the yellow man

Born in the U.S.A.- Bruce Springsteen

12. Now, I don't mind chopping wood

And you leave the rest
But they should never
Have taken the very best

Lyrically Speaking 2022 - Day 19

Not really a Theme Thursday

I feel like I'm fixin to die rag, Country Joe and the Fish, off the Woodstock album

3. Whistling tunes
We're kissing baboons in the jungle
It's a knockout

4. The Eastern world, it is explodin'
Violence flarin', bullets loadin'
You're old enough to kill but not for votin'
You don't believe in war, but what's that gun you're totin'?
And even the Jordan river has bodies floatin'
Ministers, sinisters, banisters and canisters
Bishops and Fishops and Rabbis and Popeyes and bye-bye, bye-byes

Eve of Destruction, the song that got me the vote before I turned 21

6. High on the roof, thin the blood
Another one came on the waves tonight
Comin' in, you're home

7. Here we stand or here we fall
History won't care at all
Make the bed light the light
Lady mercy won't be home tonight yeah

8. Some folks are born silver spoon in hand
Lord, don't they help themselves, Lord?
But when the taxman come to the door
Lord, the house lookin' like a rummage sale, yeah

Fortunate Son, CCR

9. Fighting soldiers from the sky
Fearless men who jump and die
Men who mean just what they say

Ballad of the Green Berets, Sgt. Barry Sadler

10. There must be some kind of way outta here
Said the joker to the thief
There's too much confusion
I can't get no relief

11. Got in a little hometown jam
So they put a rifle in my hand
Sent me off to a foreign land
To go and kill the yellow man

Born in the U.S.A. Springsteen

12. Now, I don't mind chopping wood
And I don't care if the money's no good
You take what you need
And you leave the rest
But they should never
Have taken the very best

Kroxquo Bonus: Name another song with artist that is similar to the above group

99 Luftballoons, Nena
