James Caan, veteran 'Godfather' and 'Elf' actor, dies at 82

Movie tough guy James Caan, best known for his work in such big-screen classics as "The Godfather" and "Elf," died on Wednesday, his family said.

He was 82.

"It is with great sadness that we inform you of the passing of Jimmy on the evening of July 6," according to a family statement posted to Twitter.

"The family appreciates the outpouring of love and heartfelt condolences and asks that you continue to respect their privacy during this difficult time."

My favorite Caan performance was in The Gambler, still the best movie look at a compulsive gambler.

Neither could he. His quote later was, "They didn't want an actor. That's why they hired Harrison Ford."

What was most remarkable wasn't that Caan turned that role down (as did Steve McQueen, Lee Marvin, and Robert Mitchum), but that Jackie Gleason also turned down the role. I have a hard time picturing Sheriff Buford T. Justice in this scene:

Same as Marley, my favorite was Paul Sheldon.

Also my favorite of Kathy Bates. SteelersFan won't watch it because she's so convincing.
