They had the primary in Alaska for the special election to fill the remainder of Representative Don Young's term. (He died a couple of months ago.) This is the first election under Alaska's new rules that will be in effect for the November elections as well. All candidates, regardless of party, are entered in a primary, and the top four advance to the general election in August. Voters in August use ranked choice voting among the four to select the winner. 48 candidates were on the ballot, and those advancing to the general election include Sarah Palin (who led the first round of voting), Nick Begich III (a Republican member of Alaska's most prominent Democratic family), and Al Gross (an independent who had the backing of the Democratic party in the last Senate election). The fourth spot in the election will probably go to Mary Pelolta, a state representative who could become Alaska's first indigenous member of Congress.

However, one person who probably will not be on the ballot is Santa Claus. That's his real name and picture below, and he's a city councilman from the town of North Pole (that's also the real name). He's a self-described Democratic Socialist and supporter of Bernie Sanders. He's also in sixth place currently with little chance of advancing to fourth out of the remaining votes.
