Wednesday March 19, 2008 – Day 10 – Scheduled Spanish Town Virgin Gorda – altered to Basseterre, St. Kitts.

Scattered Clouds – High 77 F 25 C, Low 73 F, 23 C

Bad storms in the North Atlantic had caused significant swells in the Caribbean, so the captain changed destinations. Spanish Town would be an anchor port, with the passengers having to take tenders to the island, and he felt it was too rough and dangerous. We headed instead, to St. Kitt’s. What an excellent decision.

This place embodied a lush tropical feel more than any other island same Samana. The dock was a clean bright busy place, with both high end shops and tourist havens. This would be our last stop before heading home, and it was a shorter stop, as it was further south than Spanish town. I determined to make the most of the time.

We headed into town early, around 9:00 am. I had my list of wishes and souvenirs to get, and still had 5 items left to acquire. I found the hats for my step-grandsons and step-son-in-law, a beautiful beach wrap for my step-daughter, and another T for Big J. I also joined Mom in purchasing 3 light sundresses, smock type, for us. Then, I hit the duty free and got my cigs and sips. It was now close to 12:00 and departure was for 2:00.

We got back to the ship, and changed to our suits. Headed to the pool deck and claimed a lounge right up front. Wasn’t really hungry yet, but it was hot, so…….Mimosa time!, Yes the popular Mimosa was once again the Drink of the Day. Goes down right smoothly in the sun LOL.

Had me a little nappy. Don’t know quite why. Woke up around 1:30 and headed to the cabin to change for lunch. (Swimwear is frowned upon in all dining areas except the BBQ grill on the pool deck.) Met up with Janet and Al and we went to Bingo at 3:00. Dint win a cent. But no time to pout, Mom and Dad and I were toasting the final Island at High Tea. I knew it was special, as Dad normally dint do High Tea. We sipped and talked and nibbled and then headed to the cabin.

To my surprise and delight, there were several friends and acquaintances to celebrate an early birthday for me. Mihai had done his magic, and there were balloons, hors d’ouerves, chilled champagne and streamers. He’s such a doll. I have some pics, but my mom has the camera at her house and doesn’t know how to upload, so I’ll get to it myself.

I received a lovely bar of Castille Soap from St Barts, a mickey of Rum from Dominica, and a tee-shirt from Grand Turks LOL. We then headed to the Polo Grill for dinner. I had French Onion Soup, a Caesar Salad, and crabcakes. Our waiters were a total delight. They serenaded us, and the surrounding tables.

Tonight, Mom and I got daring and we each took $20.00 to the casino. The swells were starting to be noticeable, and the was a notable absence of many people. We travel on ferryboats from the Island here to the Mainland many times in a year, and so the swell didn’t seem to be too bad for us. I did notice it at bedtime, but if you fell asleep fast, it wasn’t bad.

What was your game of choice at the casino and how did it go?
