1883

I just finished 1883, the prequel series to Yellowstone, on Paramount Plus. It was written by Taylor Sheridan, who also plays Charles Goodnight in a couple of episodes. The series stars Sam Elliott, Tim McGraw, and Faith Hill. Tom Hanks shows up for about 30 seconds as General George Meade in one episode, and Rita Wilson, Billy Bob Thornton, and Graham Greene also guest star. As far as I know, the series seems historically accurate. It describes how the Dutton family (led by McGraw and Hill) got from Tennessee to Montana and explains some of the plot points in Yellowstone.

The series is very well written and well acted. It is also extremely violent. Elliott is leading a wagon train of German settlers from Ft. Worth to Oregon, with McGraw and Hill's family along as well. They are beset by cattle rustlers, horse thieves, and outlaws in almost every episode and the size of the wagon train shrinks considerably over the series. It's also a very depressing series, with several likeable characters coming to bad ends.

Supposedly, there will be additional episodes, presumably describing what happens to the Duttons in the years immediately following 1883.

Paramount Plus announced that Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren will star in 1932, the next prequel series to Yellowstone. They did not reveal the characters that the pair would play. In 1883, Tim McGraw played James Dutton, the first Dutton landowner in Arizona. If Ford is playing an older version of James Dutton, his character would be about 90 years old. On the other hand, Dutton had a four-year-old son, John, who would be in his early 50s in 1932.

Paramount Network and Paramount Plus are going heavy on Taylor Sheridan shows in the upcoming season. Some of them take place in the Yellowstone universe. New series include:

Yellowstone Season 5 begins on Paramount Network November 13.

Previously mentioned 1932 with Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren will debut on Paramount Plus in December.

6666 is a Paramount Network show from Taylor Sheridan that's set on the West Texas ranch of the same name that was featured on Season 4 of Yellowstone.

Tulsa King on Paramount Plus features Sylvester Stallone as a mob boss released from prison who builds a new organization in Tulsa. Starts November 13, with the first episode also available on Paramount.

Bass Reeves on Paramount Plus is a spinoff of 1983 with David Oyelowo as the real-life Western lawman. Probably coming in 2023/

Land Man is not part of the Yellowstone universe but it is similar. It will be coming to Paramount Plus in 2023. Billy Bob Thornton stars as a modern-day "crisis manager" for a Texas oil company dealing with both oilfield and corporate crises.
