The last surviving member of the Doolittle Raiders, the squadron that dropped the first bombs on Japan in World War II. There were 80 men in the squadron and 61 survived the war. There were 16 bombers on the mission, and Cole was the co-pilot of the lead bomber with James Doolittle. He was a second lieutenant at the time of the raid and retired as a Lt. Colonel. He had been the last surviving member of the squadron since 2017.
