Word Puzzle from 538

#1 Post by silverscreenselect » Fri Apr 15, 2022 11:40 am

Here's something non-political but interesting from today's Riddler on 538.com

Can you add a vowel to an English word so that it has fewer syllables with the extra vowel than without it. You have to keep the order of the remaining letters the same.

Thus you could add "O" to "TASTY" and get "TOASTY," but both words have two syllables, so that's not the correct answer.

This hurts my head. Thinking some French derivations or ou combos. Can't come up with anything.
Well, then

Best I can do so far:
refed -> reefed
cursed -> coursed
These may not all be real words, and cursed can be pronounced as one or two syllables.

I would have though a writer would know the difference between a vowel or a consonant. :)
