SSS vs. Kohls

I had read recently that Kohl's was in trouble financially even though it had done very well up until about three years ago. I found that hard to believe until the last couple of days. My coffeemaker hasn't been working well lately (taking up to an hour to brew one pot of coffee and somehow losing a third of the water through evaporation in the process). So I decided to order another one yesterday. I checked Amazon and Target and then decided to look at Kohl's. They are a lot like CVS; they always have discounts, coupons and specials but you have to be sure that the price you're getting is really a special. But they did have a good price on a low-end 12-cup coffeemaker from a name manufacturer, and on their website they had a 25% off coupon good Sunday only. I know that if I waited a while, I could get the deal again, but I really wanted to get a new coffeemaker in place as soon as possible.

So, I ordered the coffeemaker on-line for pickup at the store. I intended to go by there today when I was in the area. At one time, Mrs. SSS had a Kohl's account and she has a Kohl's card, but she doesn't remember the details and the website wouldn't take the Kohl's card without her password. So, I set up a new account with my e-mail and a new password and paid for it with my credit card. As soon as I finalized the transaction, I got a screen that thanked me for the transaction and gave me an order number and said it would be ready for pickup soon. Nothing about what item(s) I ordered, nothing about how much I paid or how I paid. I checked my email and I had an email that said pretty much the same thing. it gave me the order number without any other details and a link so I could keep track of the order. I followed the link and got to my new online account, entered the order number and was told that they had no record of the order. About a half hour later, I got another email saying my item was ready for pickup. Again, my account had no record of the order number and there were no details in the email about the purchase.

So, I went today and gave them all the paperwork they had and asked for a receipt. They brought out the coffeemaker and a "receipt" that showed the item but nothing about the price paid. I asked if they could print up a receipt. They showed me the screen on their register that showed the price but said they couldn't print that up. So I asked for the manager and she said that because this was an online order, they couldn't give me a receipt showing the price. We then called customer service in their home office and they started to tell me the same thing that there was no way they could get me any kind of receipt. Finally, the manager did the only smart thing they've done in the entire transaction. She issued a refund for the amount I paid (under $25), gave me a receipt for the return, and let me keep the coffeemaker for free for all the hassle I'd gone through.

P.S.: When I got home I had an email thanking me for my purchase and containing a copy of the same receipt they told me an hour earlier they couldn't give me.

I"ve bought well over a hundred items online and always gotten receipts both by email and on the company's website. I got my free coffeemaker, but I'm not going to be heading back to Kohl's any time soon.

I used to have my prescriptions filled at Walgreens. I had them on automatic refill with mail delivery. I kept having the automatic refills turned off somehow. They also turned off the home delivery. I now use Cigna (who bought Express Scripts); they have had no problems.

I still use Walgreens for new prescriptions as I can't wait for them to be mailed to me. They called me to say it was time to order a refill of one of them last Monday. I went ahead and had them do the refill. I never got an email or text saying it was ready for pickup, but I checked online and saw it was ready. When I went to pick it up Saturday, they didn't see that I had anything. I checked using their phone app and found no record of a refill being ordered or ready for pickup. It just disappeared. They said they'd put in the order, and it should be prepared within two hours. I checked online since I hadn't gotten a notification and found it was still in process. I rechecked it Sunday morning, and it still was in process. I checked after noon and saw it was ready, still without a notification. At least they had my copay at $5 instead of the $15 that I had for the first order.

Ain't technology wonderful?

I guess we have become spoiled, that so much works so well and so often, that when it doesn't, it throws us off.

Pretty much nowadays the only time I go into Kohls is to return something to Amazon. That service is fantastic.
