Buffalo Bills Strike Deal for Taxpayer-Funded $1.4 Billion Stadium

https://www.nytimes.com/2022/03/28/nyre ... -deal.html

Main points:

To be constructed next to the existing Highmark Stadium

$1,400 million total cost
$600 million paid by New York State
$250 million paid by Erie County
$200 million paid by an NFL loan
$350 million paid by the Pegulas (Owner Terry Pegula’s net worth is estimated to be around $5.8 billion)

The new stadium would be owned by the state and rented to the Bills

The Bills would commit to playing 30 years at the new stadium

The stadium would seat about 60,000 near the smallest in the league, but would be partially enclosed, which would explain at least some of the high cost compared to other recent open-air construction

The deal requires approval from both the state legislature in Albany and the local Erie County government.

I guess this is for those who wouldn't recognize it as $1.4 Billion...

I'm not sure who the state feels is going to rent the stadium for the 355 days a year that the Bills don't have home games. I somehow don't see University of Buffalo football being a big draw. You could presumably have some concerts or motocross events, but that's it.

Other stadiums have also hosted Monster Trucks, Supercross, PBR, Soccer, WWE, Boxing, Hockey, Baseball & Basketball.

Only $850 million.

It's amazing that this continues to happen. I pretty sure Robert Kraft is the only NFL owner who didn't fleece the locals to build a new venue (Gillette Stadium). He did threaten to move to Hartford first, though, like many other owners have done.

I sure wish our resident Bills fan was still around to comment on the news.

Groundbreaking is today, with the stadium scheduled to open in '26. Highmark's naming rights will carryover to the new building.
