I always liked his work. There was always a bit of an edge to it. He is not usually remembered as one of the great "stars" but he was a hell of an actor.

Oh man, he was one of my favorites when I was in college.

My favorite character of his was Body Heat. Obviously I like Kathleen Turner in that movie, what 20 something kid didn't, but Hurt's character, I don't know, something about a runner who smokes right after finishing a run, was cool to me at the time. I ran and I smoked. :?

In recent years, Hurt did most of his best work on TV. He was very good on both Damages and Goliath.

I respected him as an actor, but apparently he was not very nice to Marlee Matlin when she won her Oscar (her said something about how did it feel to win on her first movie while other people had to wait, plus some other uglinesses). If I am backing Marlee Matlin or someone else, it will always be her. Just for her appearances on The West Wing, if nothing else.

I didn't like Kiss of the Spider Woman, which doesn't detract from Hurt's performance.

The Accidental Tourist is probably my favorite of his movies.
