Shackleton's lost ship is found in Antarctic

Endurance: Shackleton's lost ship is found in Antarctic

Scientists have found and filmed one of the greatest ever undiscovered shipwrecks 107 years after it sank.

The Endurance, the lost vessel of Antarctic explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton, was found at the weekend at the bottom of the Weddell Sea.

The ship was crushed by sea-ice and sank in 1915, forcing Shackleton and his men to make an astonishing escape on foot and in small boats.

Video of the remains show Endurance to be in remarkable condition.

Even though it has been sitting in 3km (10,000ft) of water for over a century, it looks just like it did on the November day it went down.

Its timbers, although disrupted, are still very much together, and the name - Endurance - is clearly visible on the stern.

Missing ship found in Lake Superior after 130 years

Once thought to be lost forever, the 130-year-old wreckage of the ship Atlanta has finally been discovered at the bottom of Lake Superior.

Located 35 miles off Deer Park, Michigan, the "wonderfully preserved shipwreck," lies in the murky depths 650 feet below the lake's surface, according to the Great Lakes Shipwreck Historical Society (GLSHS), which announced its discovery Thursday.

The GLSHS found the 172-foot schooner barge after using sonar in partnership with Marine Sonic Technology to map more than 2,500 miles of Lake Superior in the summer of 2021.

Time for research to give the wreck context accounts for the delay in announcing Atlanta's discovery, according to Corey Adkins, the communications and content director of GLSHS.

The seven-member crew loaded into a lifeboat and paddled for hours until arriving at the Crisp Point Life-Saving Station. While attempting to land the boat near the station, it overturned and only two members made it safely to shore.

The Shackleton expedition took along a professional photographer by the name of Frank Hurley. I don't remember where I saw one of his Expedition photos for the first time, but I was entranced and immediately went looking for more.

The History Channel will debut Shackleton’s Endurance: The Lost Ice Ship Found on March 22 at 8 MT. Bridge won't be done by then, but the program will no doubt come around several more times in the rotation at a better time for me.

EVERY crew member survived! Wow!

Here's the Help Wanted ad that Shackleton ran: “Men wanted for Hazardous Journey. Small wages, bitter cold, long months of complete darkness, constant danger. Safe return doubtful. Honour and recognition in case of success.”

Check your local listings for a repeat airing about 4 hours later. Here, it runs at 10:03 and repeats at 2:04.

A&E did a 2-episode miniseries in 2002, titled "Shackleton," starring Kenneth Branagh.

PBS did a 3-episode recreation of the expedition in 2014, titled "Chasing Shackleton."

About the Show (Chasing Shackleton)
Follow a crew of five intrepid explorers led by renowned adventurer, scientist and author Tim Jarvis as they re-create Sir Ernest Shackleton’s epic sea-and-land voyage in a replica of the original explorers’ boat, using only the tools and supplies his team used."

I would guess they both may be re-airing soon...
