I used to be able to understand 99% of the dialogue in Hollywood films. But over the past 10 years or so, I've noticed that percentage has dropped significantly — and it's not due to hearing loss on my end. It's gotten to the point where I find myself occasionally not being able to parse entire lines of dialogue when I see a movie in a theater, and when I watch things at home, I've defaulted to turning the subtitles on to make sure I don't miss anything crucial to the plot.

Well, I guess? it's good that it's not me and my failing hearing. I've had some success by linking my Aftershokz to the TV but that only really works if I'm the only one watching - otherwise the slight lag from the main speakers and the bluetooth gives an annoying echo effect. But that's a fault of my poor hearing.

I've found the volume thing to be really bad on action movies. I can't hear the dialogue so I turn the volume up, but then you get a car chase or explosion scene and it's painfully loud. I gave up watching "Black Widow" due to the sound (And the fact that unless you'd had already seen all the other 'Universe" movies you'd be totally lost in knowing the plot). Sadly, my solution over the past few years has been to rarely watch TV.

I've not done a movie theatre viewing in a while and was never big on going but I seem to recall that it's a problem there too.

My Sony HDTVs have a dialog boost setting which I've used for years.

Read the article. My takes are:

1) a lack of respect for the audience
2) an arrogance that says “ I’m good enough to not have to put out the best I can”.

For many years, we have always turned the subtitles on when we watch a movie or TV Show if that is possible.

We really miss that option in the theater and it often takes a while to learn to listen.

We also miss it if what we are watching at home doesn't have it.

I notice that Christopher Nolan-director of Dunkirk which I hate with the heat of a 1000 suns-was especially singled out.

Even looking past my hatred for the movie-could anyone really understand Kenneth Branagh?
