The Power of the Dog led with 12 nominations. Dune had 10, while West Side Story and Belfast had 7 each.

In an interesting note, Olivia Colman and Jessie Buckley got nominations for playing the same character at different ages in the same film. I know that's happened before in Iris, but it's fairly rare.

Judi Dench and J.K. Simmons' nominations were probably the biggest surprises. Conspicuous by their absence were Spider-Man (only nomination for Best Visual Effects), Sing 2 (for Best Animated Film), Lady Gaga, Jennifer Hudson, Frances McDormand, Ruth Negga, Bradley Cooper, Caitriona Balfe, Aaron Sorkin (for Best Original Screenplay), and Denis Villeneuve (for Best Director).

Leslie Jordan and Tracee Ellis Ross announced the nominees. Jordan had a horrible time trying to pronounce the name of Denis Villeneuve in the Best Screenplay category, so naturally he had to do it again (only slightly better) when Dune got nominated for Best Picture.

If West Side Story wins Best Picture, 90-year-old executive producer Rita Moreno will be one of those on stage to accept it.

I want them to ask her to present the award for which Ariana DeBose is nominated, as that's the role for which she won all those years ago.

I do not get out to see as many films as others, like SS, so I have not seen many of the Best Picture nominees, and most of those that I did were not good, in my view.

Foe me, the best films of the year were:
1. CODA
2. Tick, Tick . . . Boom
3. Encanto
4. Spider Man
5. Shang-Chi

The first three still move me every time that I watch them, and the latter two are great as "super hero movies" and overall storytelling.

I already stated how much I hated Dune here. I also am shocked by the nominations for "Being the Ricardos" (three for acting, but none for best film.) "Don't Look Up" was incredibly "not clever" and wasted a ton of good actors.

Emilia Jones was robbed of a nomination for Best Actress. If you want to see a masterclass in the creation of a real, understated character, watch her in CODA.

If Andrew Garfield does not win for becoming Jonathan Larson, . . . .

I can only hope that the Academy Awards actually rewards creativity and impact to movie for Best Original Song. Beyonce and Billie Eilish got nominated for nominated for one of their run-of-the-mill songs. The Academy blew it last year when it did not reward "Husavik", and it will again if one of those two win (and I am afraid that it will be the latter). I want to check out the Van Morrison song, and the ballad from Encanto is incredible (only outdone by "We Don't Talk About Bruno").

Typically, the winner for Best Supporting Actor the year before presents the Best Supporting Actress award (and vice versa). That would be Daniel Kaluuya. The last thing the Academy wants this year is a repeat of the Best Actor fiasco from last year.

If Rita attends, she may present an Oscar in one of the earlier categories.

I watched this movie last weekend. I cannot remember ever watching another movie where I hated every single character in the movie. I almost could appreciate some of the artistic aspects of the movie, and Cumberbatch had some fine acting, but it was a slog of a movie.
