Watching Hist Channel re accents

#1 Post by Beebs52 » Wed Jan 12, 2022 1:36 pm

So, okay. Do you now or have you ever called:

Carbonated beverage - soda or pop?
Public water dispenser - bubbler or water fountain?
Large piece of living room furniture - sofa, couch, or Davenport?
Well, then

Yes to all of those: Born and raised in the North East. Have lived most of my life in the South.

True story: We moved from NJ to TN in the early 70's to run a marina. My mom was running the counter at the marina store. A fisherman came in looking for something to drink.

Fisherman: "What kind of Cokes do you have?"

Mom: "Small Coke, Large Coke or can Coke."

I was an obnoxious grammar snob even as a kid, but learned to love it.

When I go into a restaurant with which I'm not familiar I ask the server what their "house cola" is.

Co-coler
Suitguy is not bitter.

feels he represents the many educated and rational onlookers who believe that the hysterical denouncement of lay scepticism is both unwarranted and counter-productive

The problem, then, is that such calls do not address an opposition audience so much as they signal virtue. They talk past those who need convincing. They ignore actual facts and counterargument. And they are irreparably smug.

That map has my current county as 80-100% "pop", but I have not heard a single person here say that.
