Four-time Indy 500 champion and member of one of the premier auto racing families. His son, Al Unser Jr. has won the Indy 500 twice, and his older brother Bobby Unser won the race three times. Unser Sr. also won the Indy Car season championship three times. (Bobby Unser and his son Bobby Unser, Jr., also a racer, died earlier this year as well.) Al Unser Sr. had been diagnosed with cancer 17 years ago.
