AAAAUUURRRRGGGGHHHH!!!!!!!!

#1 Post by littlebeast13 » Sat May 17, 2008 3:58 pm

I have been waiting 16 years for a second chance at catching a homerun during a Major League ballgame. It was in September of 1992 when I got my only other shot... at a homer Felix Jose hit right to me.... but I didn't have my glove and chickened out on it. I exorcised that ghost somewhat 4 years ago when I scooped up a Scott Rolen homer, but I didn't actually catch it, thus it was not the ultimate thrill.

I finally got that chance today. About the easiest way you can possibly get it. In the Top of the 7th inning, Carlos Pena hit a high fly ball that carried RIGHT....TO.....ME! I had my glove by my side, I quickly put it on, I was ready for it..... I didn't even have to move an inch!......

And it &*#&*#@ popped right out of the pocket of my glove!!!!!!!

Because of my shoddy defense, the lady sitting behind me got hit in the head with the ball, and a lady 2 seats down from her wound up with the ball. It hurts even more because Pena is a member of my Paquette Pantheon of favorite players because I was at the game in KC 4 years ago where he went 6-6 with a pair of homers.

I am going to be kicking myself for a looooooooong time over this. And given the number of balls my now 23 year old glove has dropped lately in BP (including one Friday night), it's getting left home from now on. I'll use my Dad's old glove next time....

I will die if they show that homer during the ESPN highlights tonight. I'm not sure if I want to see how it looked on TV or not.....

Sorry about that. We hope you get another chance. ESPN will probably not show extensive highlights from this game since neither the Yankees nor the Red Sox were playing.

BTW, this gives me enough posts to make the extended list.

Congratulations! You are now immortalized for as long as the rankings continue to be posted!

I'd give you a game ball for your accomplishment, but I obviously don't have one to give.....

I just noticed it on the video clip along with the game recap on ESPN's website.

Thankfully, it was too grainy on my computer to see it clearly.....

Suitguy is not bitter.

feels he represents the many educated and rational onlookers who believe that the hysterical denouncement of lay scepticism is both unwarranted and counter-productive

The problem, then, is that such calls do not address an opposition audience so much as they signal virtue. They talk past those who need convincing. They ignore actual facts and counterargument. And they are irreparably smug.

I had a similar chance at a Pirates game a couple of years ago...only I chickened out because in order to snag it I would have had to knock a vendor out of the way.

The ball plopped right down on top of his container of snacks and bounced right into the glove of a guy a row or two below me.

well , I have been waiting years to answer this thread.

Perhaps BeastieBoy has been lucky enough to get a MLB ball hit as a foul into the stands, as opposed to a home run.

During the years the Expos were in Montreal, I had exactly one foul ball hit to me. I muffed it.

It was during the years before they chose to keep the roof permanently closed, and September weekend games were terrific afternoon experiences. I was sitting on the foul side of the foul line, in fact far foul, down the right field line. It was a Sunday game, and sunny. The opponents were the St. Louis Cardinals.

Center fielder Andy Van Slyke was hitting. He hit the ball well foul, towards me, and it was quite clear to me straight in my direction, but my sense told me it would fall 50 feet short . I had my glove, though, and up, sort of. I lost the ball in the sun. Then ceme the milliseconds when I found the ball again, unfortunately not quick enough to avoid... the ball bouncing off my left shoulder. To be picked up by someone else.

Who had the temerity to then check with me that I was all right.....

I was thankful the game had not been televised in Montreal, as I must have looked completely ridiculous.

I did not check nor did I want to know, whether the game had been on the air in St. Louis, and I have desultorily watched "dumbest fan:" clip compilations since then, thinking, "There but for the grace...., a camera could have been pointed in MY direction, too."

I have muffed a foul ball... well, maybe 2 depending on how you look at it (It was a ground ball by the Astros pitcher Wade Miller that rolled right under my glove... not a true muff, but one I should've had). And in the irony to end all ironies, your chance came against my home team... my foul ball muff was against your Montreal Expos!

On May 4, 2003, while sitting in the nice front row seats a lawyer friend of my aunt's had, Jose Vidro shanked a line drive right to me down the third base line. I barely had 2 seconds to react, and by the time I got my glove up, it had already hit off the top of it and deflected about 10 rows behind me. Other than the one I muffed yesterday, that is the only other game ball I had go off my glove.

As I mentioned in the first post, I do have a homerun ball hit by Rolen in 2004 (Off of then Reds pitcher Josh Hancock - RIP), but it bounced off the top of the wall, off of the row of bleachers I was sitting in, landed in a pile of trash under the row in front of me, and I was able to dig it out. Not the most thrilling way to get a souvenir, but given that you never know when you'll ever get another chance at another one (and of course, whether you'll piss away that chance like I did), it's still pretty special to me....

I saw the replay of the Pena HR and noticed one fan who had to reach to his right and another who covered his head, perhaps in frustration. Were you one of them?

I couldn't pick myself out at all, though it's hard to see on the small little window, and I paused it at about every moment. I can barley even see where the ball deflected, which would pinpoint where my glove was....

I was in the third row, I should've been right behind the guy in the white who was standing up. I was wearing my maroon jacket, the only idiot in the whole ballpark wearing one (though I only brought it to keep my arms from scorching in the sunlight I'm never in)....

Yesterday, I was at my son's game (11-12 year olds), sitting just behind the batter. A foul ball was hit straight back. I raised my left hand as high as it would go without standing up. The ball hit it and it stuck. I got a bunch of applause from the other parents in the stands. I didn't tell them that my hand hurt like hell.

As soon as it happened, I thought of LB.

Well, she was offered the ball by the lady who got it, but turned it down....

If she would've wanted to kick me in the back of the head for my boneheaded play, I'd have let her....

That last time I tried to barehand a ball when when we used to play softball in gym class without gloves. 6 months before the Felix Jose incident, I broke the tip of my left middle finger trying to catch a popup during a PE game. I still can not fully straighten out the tip of that finger to this day (At least I can still give the bird with it).....
