Nine Overtime College Football Game

The rules were changed for overtime this year to get games to end more quickly, but nobody told Illinois and Penn State. Under the new rules, teams must go for two points after a touchdown in the second overtime and all subsequent overtimes are just two-point conversions. The teams were tied 10-10 after regulation and each kicked field goals in the first two overtimes. Then, nobody scored in the next five overtime periods. In the eighth overtime, both teams made their two-point conversion. Finally, Illinois scored in the ninth overtime to win the game, 20-18. Since teams alternated options in each period, Penn State chose to play in front of its student section (noisier when the visiting team had the ball) when it had the option, and Illinois elected the other end of the field. So, the teams went back and forth from one end of the field to the other seven times.

Penn State paid for it in today's AP Top 25 poll, dropping from No. 7 to No. 20, which I thought was a bit much, going against another Big Ten team (yes, unranked, but still).

But, you know, play better, and they will rank you better.
