Not a surprise, but UConn head football coach Randy Edsall has stepped down, effective immediately.

Yesterday, he said he would retire at the end of the season. Guess someone changed his mind.

UConn is 0-2 for the year, including a loss Saturday to FCS school Holy Cross.

Add a little bit higher profile casualty. Clay Helton, the coach at Southern Cal, was fired after a 42-28 home loss against Stanford. Southern Cal had been ranked 14th in the country before the loss. That game was notable in a bizarre way because the Southern Cal kicker was ejected for targeting while making a tackle on the opening kickoff.

Apparently, USC enjoys these mid-season firings. Helton is the third consecutive coach, following Lane Kiffin and Steve Sarkisian, to be let go mid-season.

Son-of-Spiff asked if they drove him to LAX so they could fire him on the tarmac, as they have done before.

The third firing of the season and it's not even October. Georgia Southern (my granddaughter's alma mater) gve coach Chad Lundsford the boot today. The team was 1-3, following a conference loss to University of Louisiana.
