#1 Post by Vandal » Tue Aug 24, 2021 11:00 am

Rolling Stones drummer Charlie Watts dies at 80

"It is with immense sadness that we announce the death of our beloved Charlie Watts," a statement said.

"He passed away peacefully in a London hospital earlier today surrounded by his family."

It said he was "a cherished husband, father and grandfather" and "one of the greatest drummers of his generation".

Damn, I never thought he'd be the first one to go (aside from Brian Jones, obviously, for the pedantically inclined among you).

He was also criminally underrated as a drummer, even more so than Ringo Starr.

Too many folks, mostly non-musicians, are more impressed by flash and speed than by what really makes a good drummer...providing a solid, rock steady foundation for the ensemble. The Stones would've been an incoherent mess without Watts keeping things together while allowing the band's signature looseness to work its magic. Watts was the perfect percussionist for the band. For instance, imagine Keith Moon as their drummer. One of my favorites but with him behind the kit the Stones' sound would've been complete chaos. It's all about the fit.
